I’m running a P4 2.8GHz @ 3.1GHz and thief runs way to fast. I’ve tried using Turbo but even at 1% things move a little quicker than they should, and they are “jerky.” I’ve tried DOSBox but the game says it cannot be run in DOS mode; this would probably negate the use of Mo’slow as well. Any thoughts?

I ran almost that same setup not too long ago, with Windows98, and it ran smooth as ever. Just turn up anti-aliaing and all that. If you are using XP, I don't know. I don't own XP.

You might need to change the Vsync setting on your video card.

Thanks for your responses. I couldn’t find AA or v-sync settings in the game’s menus so I adjusted them in catalyst control center. It seems to have slowed them down almost to their proper speed, they still seem a little fast to me but it could just be me. Is there a way to adjust these settings in-game?

Make sure the fullscreen refresh rate for your chosen Thief resolution is forced to 60hz, as well enabling vsync, and this should nail the speed problem.
Thief was designed in an era before game-controlled vsync and FSAA were common (and indeed before FSAA even existed), so there's no in-game controls for that kind of thing.

I kind of figured that Thief was before AA but I could remember when it came into use so I thought I’d make sure that there was no config file setting I could change or something.
How do I force my refresh rate? I have already manually set it to 60 in Windows. You want me to DISABLE v-sync? Azal’s sticky post on troubleshooting says to ENABLE it to slow Thief down.

There is a program I tried a while back called CPU killer which is a Windows equivalent of Moslo. You could try it.

Lol, I had forgotten about that one. :D I have a copy of it around here somewhere… It would probably be easier to DL it again rather than try and dig it up though.

Sorry, I meant "enable" :o . Anyway, your desktop refresh rate is not the same as your fullscreen refresh rate, which must be set through your driver control panel. NVidia's allows you to do this and I'm pretty sure ATI's does too, but I don't have it handy so can't tell you where to find that setting. While you're at it set your desktop refresh rate back to 85, otherwise you'll go blind ;)

I use (
http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=733) ATI tray tools instead of the catalyst control center. It works well, and has several extra features that CCC doesn't (incuding allowing Fog to be enabled properly!). I particularly like that it has full-screen refresh control. Anyway, give it a try, it sits in your tray and is extremely customizeable. You can program it to have individual settings for each game .exe, and it even has a launcher. That way, you wouldn't have to fiddle w/it every time you wanted to play thief. It would remember your settings, and even put them back to normal when you exited.
