Was there ever a definite answer about what the name of these creatures is?

Officially, and confirmed in the gamefiles and editor, there are no ratmen in the older titles. The term is only ever used by third parties and fans, never Eidos and LGS. They are all ApeBeasts. The TDP/Gold ApeBeasts are modeled after capuchin monkeys, monkeys have tails, apes don't. Dan Thron thinks monkeys are hilarious. Because apes don't have tails, and no primate sounds like the ApeBeasts, people are confused. The texture files for the ApeBeasts are called "monkey."

Hence Garrett's tongue-in-cheek voice-over in Thief 3 where he says "Great - giant rats!"

I always preferred to think that they were "ratmen" in TDP and Gold, because that was creepiest for me, more than mentally higher apes, but imo TMA left no doubt: same vioces and movements.

I didn't know that, and that's all we need to hear to solve the riddle ;)

With both Constantine and Viktoria dead, it's not clear if the ape/ratbeasts will survive into Thief 3. Apebeasts are supposed to be the same creatures that were encountered in Thief TDP and Thief Gold (i.e., the ratbeasts), but they are different enough that they are treated separately in (

Yep. Written by a taffer. You can find lots of ratmen references in fanon and non-LGS texts.

That's fair enough though, and I forgot about that note in the Circle Bestiary, so I vote to consider them as different too :thumb:
