Apparently Jashin's not the only one who thinks Starcraft is serious business - by june gloom

I find Company of Heroes fun because you don't need to micromanage nearly to the same degree as in Starcraft and its like. Three squads of infantry and a pair of tanks is just five units, not hard at all to manage. As well, the game doesn't give many units unique special abilities, so a lot of the micromanaging comes down to being in the right position, facing the right way, shooting the right thing, and occasionally throwing a grenade- and that is manageable for someone like me who is not amazing at RTSes.

I hate RTSes without special abilities. :p

HThe three big campaigns from CoH and OF each might run you about 6 hours, and the ToV campaigns are ridiculously short (each might last an hour or so).
Six hours?
There are 15 missions in the first Normandy campaign.
You're saying you can go from start to finish, on expert, getting every secondary objective and every medal at an average of 24 minutes a mission?
You must have some gaming skills.
I can spend 3 hrs on one mission easy.
If even 2 of the campaigns to come are this size I'll be over 100 no problem.
Let alone skirmishing
Full on multiplayer's got to wait till autumn till I can get more money for my internet.
I've currently got a 3 gig cap.
How useful my connection is for mp though I'm not sure
Check out the ping on this - (satellite broadband is laggy by its very nature)

3 gig cap? Per month? Ouch.
Namdrol on 21/5/2010 at 20:27
I pay 50 quid for that. Satellite internet, small customer market - expensive, shit service.
But prices are coming down and I might change provider in October if they can't come up with a compelling reason to keep me.

What?
Most units have
specific abilities and you can grant further abilities with unit, HQ and/or doctrine choices. What exactly do you mean by "special"?

I've been playing the Starcraft 2 beta recently. The micromanagement required to be good at it is ridiculous, and in my opinion, not fun at all. For example, the Zerg have a Queen unit which has an ability which spawns 4 additional larva over the next 30 seconds, and only costs a minuscule 25 mana. So every minute (or less?) you have to remember to select the queen and tell her to use this ability on your hive otherwise you're screwed because you won't be able to build your army fast enough. I mean, I don't want to deal with shit like that, it's just not fun (unless you're some half-man half-machine who enjoys that kind of tediousness).
I absolutely love how Company of Heroes works. In my opinion it's by far the best RTS game out there... it's really too bad the online service sucks and most of the players are jerks anyway.

I feel exactly the same way on all of those points. I haven't been playing much lately, but I really have been in the mood. My name in the game is "Jammontrald" so add me to your friends and if I'm ever on we'll get a game on. I played with Subj Effect a while back, but I was a little cheap with the 88's... still kind of feel bad about that haha (use snipers next time SE!!)

It's mostly throw grenades, fire panzerfaust, or issue medkit. It's all very straightforward and doesn't require a ton of micromanaging. I can't think of any units that have three or four unique abilities like the Science Vessel, Dark Archon, Defiler, or Queen from Starcraft. If you're saving your munitions for an air strike or something you can get by without using any such abilities at all.

These are some
fun threads in GenGaming, eh? Full of engaging discussion and not at all populated by sniping mean-spirited humourless bullshit.
I knew it would get all better after I leave!

A lot of people are worried that SC2 will just be SC1 with a new coat of paint,
They're certainly planning to stick very close to the original formula, and the basic principles are going to be the same, but they're adding new mechanics and changing/replacing a lot of the units.
African-american, I beseech you - If SC2 was just SC with 3D graphics it wouldn't be such a fucking disaster. It would still be bad, because graphics in SC2 suck seven dicks(How Diablo 3 got a lot of flak for looking "cartoony" and SC2 didn't is a fucking definition of irony), but it's the mechanics changes that turned it into a joke. SC was extremely clumsy to work with, but that's why it became such a huge pro game - it required really a lot, lot, LOT of skill and experience to play it at top level - it's honestly hardest game ever made when played online. SC2, being a modern Blizzard game(modern Blizzard being synonymous with EZ, scrubs and casual) is nothing like that - it's got pleasant interface, is very easy to work with, there is no room for abusable glitches which sometimes defined SC gameplay, the game micros for you, the game macros for you, and in general is not something that requires a shitload of skill to master. And that's why it's going to fucking fail harder than Warcraft 3. Oooh yeah.
And finally, better version of the news deth posted, from only real SC source:
