Apple Appstore - the most obnoxious thing ever AKA how do I get free Apps??? - by Yakoob

OK so I recently got an iphone courtest of my boss, and dared trying to install a free eBook reader app so I can read books from my library.
First, I needed an AppleID. The registration process was tedious as hell, I had to choose 3 different security questions and provide my full name name address - the hell? And of course it failed, so I had to re-do it, on my Windows PC just to spite Apple (the website only required one security question, for some odd reason). Now confirm email! Now confirm on the website! So much faffing around, but finally, it's active!
GREAT, I can now install the free app - wait, no? My account hasn't been used with the Apple Store yet so I need to "review" it. By "review" they mean provide my full contact and credit card information.
To install a FREE app.
wtf is this bullshit? Any way around this? So far I tried random digits but it wont let me through (even tho it had no problem with my imaginary Island in Hawaii).
I'll probably crack and just put mine in cause seriously nothing will probably happen, but still, this just boggles my mind slightly.

Was such a long time since I got my iPad, can't remember the specifics of the registration, but that sounds about right. It was a one time thing for something I'd be using a lot so I didn't mind if it took a while, but I can understand if you only wanna get in to download one single thing and then never touch the AppStore again that it could be frustrating. :erg:
Also keep track of your password because you'll need it every time you get something from the AppStore, even if it's free.

That's odd, I have a previous gen iPod Touch, and I sure didn't need a credit card to install apps. The apps are pretty awful, though, ads everywhere on the tiny screen, concerns about privacy, and the games mostly don't do it for me. The store is amazingly sluggish as well, and the reviews are not much help in picking things. In general the presentation is very slick, and I get why everyone feels like they are living in a beautiful future world, but its got a lot to improve upon. I mostly use the browser, maps, email, and reminder apps. I'm also a grouchy old man.
