I never quite warmed to the game to the same extent as I did to the Fallout titles, but it's definitely one of the best RPGs out there, with a fantastic world, great music and strong writing. Well worth checking out. There are also fan patches out there, as well as a resolution patch.

Well damn, I didn't know that!
Cheers Yakoob.
I still have the boxed copy with the full manual, but it's cool to know it's readily available elsewhere.

The Arcanum manual is definitely one of the vintage manuals I enjoyed most; other examples would be the Ultima and Fallout manuals.

That's my major gaming regret. I had the original Mac version of Fallout with the ring-bound manual, and I sold that Mac and all of its software to a work colleague. That manual was brilliant. The description of a nuclear explosion was awesome, yet completely unnecessary, but it added so much to the experience.

arcanum was awesome apart from that one early dungeon with the stone golems or whatever they were, if you didnt have magic you were toast.

Had lots of fun with this one. I mean how many steampunk (coolest genre evah) RPG's are there out there..

Theoretically, this is the ultimate PC game for me:
I really love Steampunk, and I really love story-driven RPG's
However, when it came to actually playing the game, it was not a very enjoyable experience at all because of the crappy combat system.
It's just not balanced, and something about it seems "off" whether I play realtime or turn based.
And what makes it worse is that Arcanum's combat system is based on Fallout's combat system, which I love. What the heck happened during the transition?
I see some arcanum fans here. What do you guys think of the combat system?

The combat actually ruined it for me. It seemed like they knew it was broken, so they broke it even more with an imbalanced magical class (spam Harm a million times), and a horrible throwing mechanic (you can spam an infinite number of grenades in a single turn).
The story and world is interesting, and to be honest, even the graphics grew on me, but the prospect of more terrible combat just killed it for me and I eventually abandoned the game about halfway through.
