My level 21 thiefing halfling has been notoriously robbing all of Tarant dry :) now exploring the boil before I head out to isle of despair.
Can someone explain prowling to me, though? I have put 3 ranks into it, have DX of 15 and PE of 9 and it seems like an utterly useless skill. When I prowl (without any heavy armor giving me noise penealty), the enemy ALWAYS becomes aware when I get within 15 feet of it, even if I approach from behind. I can also break into shops without being prowled with no penealty, so what the hell is the point of this skill?
Likewise, what's the use of backstab if I can never sneak behind an enemy ?

I agree that prowling is a pretty useless skill. I'm pretty sure it dosen't work unless your doing it at night or behind cover. I'd just stick with the ranks you have now and only turn it on when your picking locks/bashing chests/doing other bad stuff, since NPCs seem to have radar for that kind of thing.
Oh, and backstab dosen't need you to be sneaking. You just need to have an enemy not face you. If you set the game to turn based and max out your backstabbing, you can absolutely murder every enemy you come across in a turn or two. ( Just run behind them and stab 'em with a fine steel dagger until their kibbles and bits. )
