I just found this article: (

Architecture by subtraction was also the process used to create spaces in computer gaming’s The Dark Engine.
.....
This approach to level design was probably predicated by Thief’s unique aural requirements. Playing a thief, the propagation of sound in an environment was a vital gameplay mechanic, and one more suitably accomplished by carving into a solid. Coincidentally, the Thief series exhibited some of the finest “levels” in gaming history from Life of the Party to Shalebridge Cradle.

Nice!
With a mention of the "Thief 2 FM - Saints and Thieves by Jani Saarijarvi", too.:D
I take it Oliver Zeller is the author of that piece? His profile says he did some work for online games.

It seems that many hard-core Thief fans are from Finland like Jani Saarijärvi there. Iikka Keränen is Finnish too. He designed the Ambush -level in T2 and he's working for Valve now.
Markus "Mokkis" Lappalainen - the designer of "gathering at the inn"-FM is also Finnish.

What you say! :wot: I hadn't heard about that. I hope Alan Wake will be very good considering the amount of time they've taken making it.
