Are burricks supposed to be an analogue to dragons in the Thiefverse ? - by Petike the Taffer

Well, I personally think they were created by the devs with this sort of thing in mind. The Thiefverse is more on the realistic side of the "Mohs Scale of Fantasy Hardness", so it would seem pretty reasonable. Dragons - just smaller, lacking wings and belching gas instead of breathing fire. :D What's your opinion ?

mm no idea what they were supposed to be....
I always look upon them as livestock...we often see Burricks penned up and in stables...being reared for Burrick steaks for the nobles tables...also wasn't there Burrick Races somewhere?:D
There was a pet burrick in an FM called Pinky...I guess when they grow too big for a pet, they are eaten :(...or released into the wild again.
I think it would be unwise to house them anywhere near the gas lamps or torches,if their breath is indeed combustible...and I wonder if their farts are as powerful as their breath...do they only eat Shrooms or can they graze on other things, which may stop the gasses if they are a pet....would they die if they didnt have shrooms, and is that all they can eat....does Burrick meat repeat on you, with the burrick sound.....oh so many questions.
But Dragon...not sure what the devs idea for them was:confused:

I really don't think so, Petike. First and foremost, they're not carnivores. No fire, either, which is really the first thing people tend to think of when it comes to dragons (unless they're TTRPG folks).
I'm going to go with the fact that they're a unique animal decision for the Thief setting. I'd also ask Jason to pull up his files to see if there are any visual or text-based references to dragons proper in the series - possibly something that's died out by the time the City has prospered.

Burricks burrow, dragons don't.

Now, burricks always called to my mind dragons, but more like a spoof.:p But we can't say what the devs were thinking. They also came up with frogbeasts.
Fire belching lizards. Air belching lizards. Water belching lizards. Earth belching lizards. Hmmm. Nope. And if their belch was flammable--then every level with them would be frikkin' dangerous! But I kid--then there would be a slight bit more connection to dragons, especially if we go with more of a
Reign of Fire type. Burricks may burrow, but both dragons and burricks hang out in caves.
Anyway, as per request, all that can be found regarding dragons follows:
-
Dragonfly
-Lord
Drake (could be after the duck, but the name was unused anyhow, replaced by Lord Ember)
-And thanks to Beleg for this walkthrough scan (I don't believe this is found in-game):

What is a Burrik [sic]? - talon54
Well, we're spelling it What is a "Burrick," though I don't know if that word actually gets used in the game. [Not until TMA!]
A Burrick is something like a Wumpus. Of course.
Oh, that doesn't explain it? A Burrick is something like a dinosaur, and something like a frog, and something like a mole, and something like a dragon with stinking, noxious breath. They're easily fascinated by certain sounds. Err... and they're sorta like...
Ah, heck. Play the game. Wait and see.

A burrick is just a burrick. There's nothing else I would want it to be.
jtr7 on 1/6/2009 at 08:43
No one's trying to make them anything else.:sly:

A burrick is a bipedal missing link between a mammal and an amphibian. Sort of like a giant, smelly mole-frog with long hairs on it's head, back and tail. Their diet primarly consists of underground mushrooms that they dig up while burrowing their colonies. They have lungs like mammals and they communicate with smell (They are smelly) and by "singing" .They use their large noses and powerful back legs to push away dirt, but their front legs have athropied and they can't be used for combat. They also don't seem to have sweat glands for body coolant, because they thermoregulate through their mouths when excited. They are not entirely underground-dwelling animals since their sight has not athropied by living in the dark for generations.
What I thought up.

I feel that burricks are analogues to dinosaurs.
Just play the museum missions in Thief2X and you will see why
jtr7 on 1/6/2009 at 09:02
I don't know how serious you are. :laff:
I notice fan-made missions are being used as canonical information, hopefully tongue-in-cheek. Not just in this thread, but others in several forums. How does making an FM give fanon such credibility?:D
