Being allied with either hammers or pagans is optional; but only the hammers protect you against the city watch, not the pagans in T3 even if you are allied with both.Besides, i don't like the pagan talk it's just too annnoying.
The pagans are nearly always aggressive:nono:

If you judge a faction because of a scripting glitch...
Then these are dark times indeed.

I myself would sooner be a Pagan than a Hammer. At the end of Thief 3 I ended up siding with both of them, regardless.
That's the real downside about DS; the faction system doesn't really have much of an effect on your overall gameplay choices; when I first came across it I was expecting to get sidequests and the like from your preferred faction, and an ending pertaining to which faction you allied with (if any).

Multiple endings wouldn't be so good for a story-based game/game series like Thief. Plus, there are a few things changed when allied with e.g. Pagans (you get the amulet directly) and surely a lot of things too subtle to notice.

I personally favor siding with the Hammers owing to the fact that entering their territory is mandatory for several objectives near the end while with the Pagans you basically just run through a very easy to hide in area.

:ebil: You can't drive a nail with a Pagan. So I'd have to say Hammer.

Not that it stops you from trying.

I remember meeting one Pagan in the Docks who had a wooden stick in his stomach (or rather coming out of it). Maybe someone tried earlier.

I'd pay money to see that.
...lots of money.

When I see a Hammer and a Pagan standing next to each other and I had to decide who of them I should give a big hug... I would go for the Hammer.
