Frankly, while I find the quest-log invaluable, I never understood the point of a "journal," especially those really verbose once the devs put so much effort into writing. They are narrating things that I *just* did, why would I care to read about them? If a farmer boy asks me to slay a dragon and I do so, why would I then read 4 pages about me talking to a farmer boy and slaying a dragon? Is it just the feeling of reading a Fantasy Novel, except YOU were the protagonist? Because, as much as the devs try, the narrative always ends up convoluted as you complete quests in a non-linear and intertwined manner, so it's not even a good fantasy novel...
Only exception is if you go back to a game after a long break and want to catch up. but again, skimming the quest log is much easier than spending few hours through the convoluted and usually poorly written narrative.
