I've been looking for traditional FPSs to try out on my new PC and the selection seems very scarce. By traditional, I mean something like a Quake or Unreal game, with a focus on online play.
There is UT3, but even Unreal fans seem quite unenthusiastic about it.
To me, Crysis's ridiculous engine (the game ran like shit on my friend's Quad Core Extreme) and consequent preclusion (I'm guessing) of any booming online community due to the lack of accessibility almost negates the game's status as traditional...
id Software has a very titles on the horizon, but Epic seems to have abandoned PC games in favor of console games.

It's a bit old but pick up Painkiller; it's widely regarded as the spiritual successor to Quake.

I will probably get myself killed for saying this; but you should give Red Ocean a try. It has all the gameplay aspects of the mindless shooter, add to that dreadfully bad voice acting that makes you want to facepalm and you got a pretty fun game when you're in no mood for a more serious experience.

Painkiller... I keep meaning to pick it up. Heard nothing but good things about it.
Although it doesn't seem to be on sale in the UK.
Hmm. Is Overdose the same game? An expansion or a sequel?

Overdose is the same engine, not a sequel, more like a side story, and the feelings are generally that it's not quite as good as the originals.

Thank you for the suggestions.
I remember back in the days of UT/Q3, more and more clans were getting sponsored (including my own) and it seemed as though within no time at all there would be some sort of Olympics of FPS games, however lame that sounds.
And yet now from what I hear, the biggest clan game now is Counterstrike.
Perhaps the MMORPGs have partly ruined online the FPS community.

The Serious Sam series are a tribute to the good ol' days if you are interested.
Even though Painkiller should be no contest.

The Serious Sam games are a must have, and so is Painkiller + the expansion Battle out of Hell. Both series have good graphics, great music, lots of bad guys to kill, etc.
I never played Painkiller: Overdose, the demo made sure I would never waste money on that game.

It's only 4 years old. Still looks incredible as far as I'm concerned.

Painkiller is awesome, so is Quake 4. I also miss this type of gameplay.
