I guess you meant very
interesting titles. Anyway, I'm looking forward to Rage and Doom 4 ... not least because I think they might push the modding boundaries to about the limit of a single PC's capabilities. But I expect they'll be decent shooters too.

Traditional shooters on PC are dead? There's plenty of straight-out shooters released every year. Call of Duty: World at War and Left 4 Dead came out this week.

To me, Crysis's ridiculous engine (the game ran like shit on my friend's Quad Core Extreme)

and consequent preclusion (I'm guessing) of any booming online community due to the lack of accessibility almost negates the game's status as traditional...
Crysis was never a traditional game anyway. You can't even rocketjump.
Try Warsow, maybe?

I would second the recommendation of Left 4 Dead as it does have an old school feel to the shooting but the CoD games are very much post HL2 shooters. Great games but not, I think, what the original poster is looking for.
Also Painkiller FTW!:thumb:

Left 4 Dead is a really pure shooter. Even with some atmosphere. Someone searching for oldschool action with a good horror-splatter feel to it should definately get it. As for singleplayer shooters... ah well. Coop is more fun anyway.

I still enjoy playing FPS games from the "90s. The thing is, ever since the Quake engine, things haven't really changed that much. Sure, the graphics and poly counts are significantly higher today, but the game worlds haven't changed the way they did from Doom to Quake. A 3d world is a 3d world.

Painkiller and Battle Out of Hell are awesome. Overdose is seriously shit, though.

Only Quake is better than Quake.

Another vote here for Painkiller. It's basically Quake modernized. Running around at 20mph with a super shotgun that never needs to reload while the rock soundtrack blares in the background is straight out of Quake or Doom but still damned fun.
And your basic weapon is a gun with whirling blades and a laser beam.
It's modern FPS gaming on crack. It doesn't give you regenerating health, squad-based tactics, an innovative cover system or any of the other gimmicks that feature in today's shooters- it's just the core KILL 'EM ALL gameplay perfected and repeated with enough variety to keep it interesting.
Painkiller is the closest you're going to get to the old-school shooters.
The only issue is that I don't know if it has online play at all, I've never tried.

Dude, make up your mind.
