People have been complaining that there are not many threads here about Thief, so I've spent most of Today trying to think of one. My question is this "Are you a stupid Thief?"
I know I am. What I mean is, are there things that you found out about Thief, that would have made the game so much easier if you had know before you started. There are many things that I have discovered, and felt really stupid for not working out. For example:
For a long time I didn't think you could knock out creatures other than humans. I had to go around slaughtering Burricks, Craymen, Bugbeasts, Apebeasts, etc. This made levels such as Escape, Strange Bedfellows, Bonehoard, etc. very tough.
Another thing, to start with I did not know that you KILL a zombie with one fire arrow to the stomach. I always aimed for the head, and wasted many arrows on my first trips through Bonehoard, THC, and RTC.
Also, I was unaware for quite some time that you could knock someone out while they had been stunned from a flash-bomb. This rendered the flash-bomb almost completely useless to me.
Has anyone else been a stupid Thief? I have more examples, but I don't want to tell you then at the moment.

Lockpicking - When I first got the lockpicks, I would not hold the mouse button down to use them like you're supposed to, I would go "clik-clik-clik-clik-clik-clik-clikclik-clik-clikclikclik" with the mouse until it finally opened.. *groan*

One idiot more!
I found the use for flash bombs in the return to the lost city mission in Thief2..
BTW: Just saw in CI5 how two guys took out five freedom fighters with the aid of flash grenades, the scene was built quite nicely (the guys dropped from the roof)..
Return to stupidity:
Before I knew that you could knock Burricks out, I used just to run through them buggers. This proved to be rather difficult in some missions in Thief 1 as some places were rather full of 'em

I have done the same thing real_oRGy!
I played through almost the first half of the game until I found out it was just to hold the damn button down...
...and, I complited the game without knowing that you could knock wooden doors in... when I first did, in a fan mission, I thought it was a really cool special effect... then I found out that you could do that to almost every wooden door in the game... stupid stupid me...

You can knock wooden doors in?? *doh*
Spoiler below!
Just recently, I suffered through the Escape! Experience. After literally 3 and a half hours of game time, I finally figured out how to stack the crates from the mansion to get into those treehouses. Oh, why didn't I just use the rope arrow from the beginning, behind the altar? I PLAYED THE WHOLE BLOODY LEVEL WITHOUT MY STUFF BEHIND THE ALTAR!! Aiieee! when I found my blackjack sitting there with a couple rope arrows, I just about cried. Here I had had to backstab and swordfight everything in the game, and here was my blackjack just sitting there. I hadn't been able to reach any of the upper areas, and was just dying for a single rope arrow. You have any idea how hard it is to swordfight jumping spiders??

These are good, lots of stupidity going on.. I've got another one.
I'd played Bonehoard like 30 times (literally) before realising this. In the first Burrick cavern, with the three burricks and escape from it by tunnel, that goes to the ravine. In order to get into this tunnel there is a rope hanging there. I had always asumed that the only way to get into this tunnel was via the rope.
I'm sure all of you know how difficult it is to successfully mount a rope when there are three Burricks firing framerate-killing gasses at you. I usually had to knock them out, or run around the cave to try and loose them.
Then one day, while trying to climb the rope, I missed and hit the bottom of the tunnel, and proceeded to matle myself up to it.
DOH!!!!!! YOU COULD JUST MANTLE IT!!!!
ARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!
Guess I'm stupid.

You can knock out burricks?
DAMMIT!
Now I've gotta buy a copy of thief so I can play it again.
