Mentioned in another thread, but my biggest shock was walking across from the Shermanov's to Carslyle Armoury. Garrett's sudden "be careful" scared the hell out of me.
My other stupid trick which I seem to repeat at intervals, is to take a running jump to cross a chasm or from roof to roof, and realize, as I swan dive to doom, that I was still in a crouch.
Can't jump too far from a crouching position. :D

Every single time I play through Cragscleft, Garrett gets me with his sudden hiss on the metal floor. He makes a noise as if he's dying, then complains about the metal floors. Practically kills me every time.
I didn't know the little Children of Karras were blind either, though I'm proud to say I learned that fact from the Mental Age fanfic.

Some of the minibots are blind. I think some can see, although I avoid them easily, so I may be incorrect.

I recently learned that yes, some minibots are blind. You can easily tell because the blind ones do not have that "glow in the dark green eye" that others have. The minibots can still hear you though.
I also had no idea flashbombs allowed you to knockout alerted guards until well after I finished TDP. I knew they could blind guards, but even then the few times I did use them I could never get them to work right (I'd throw them, and they'd bounce off the guards and they guards would never see the flash). It was only later that I realized you could just "drop" them and it would affect guards easier.
Took me a while to learn that stone and wood really wasn't as loud as your sound card makes you think it is. I didn't know you could literally run up behind a guard on stone and he still wouldn't hear you.

I played through the whole of Thief TDP thinking that the only forward movement key was W - my 6 year old daughter found the S key during her first try!
I always wondered why I made so much noise when I moved!:erg:
Oh and Jomero - I didn't know you could just drop the bombs - nice tip, thanks!

Mmm, the smell of unearthed threads.
Tried to blackjack a Haunt the first time I saw one? Yep.
Had no idea you could hurt Apparitions with anything besides holy water? Yep.
Unloaded an entire arsenal on Brother Murus, staring in wonder as he didn't so much as flinch? Of course.
But my crowning moment was in "Eavesdropping"... let me give a transcript.
Karras: "...and meanwhile, I will retreive our... volunteer. A most unfortunate guttersnipe who awaits just outside."
(clank of door opening)
Me (thinking): "Sweet f***, he knows I'm here, this was a setup!"
(I bolt for my life away from the door where I was listening... nothing happens.)
Me (thinking): "Nothing happened... well, maybe I didn't miss anything important."
(I start back for the door, only to get the ol' skull and crossbones of mission failure.)
Of course, I hadn't saved for about 15 minutes, so I had a LOT of backtracking to do. :o :tsktsk:

It's beginning to become evident that most players don't pay attention to the manual, or the briefing in training mission(s). :D
I presume, that is because they are used to SHOOTERS, and the race to the finish of DOOM, or UNREAL. It would seem, that a liesurely revisit and stroll through the OM's would reveal a goodly number of things many have missed in the rush to "Beat the Game". :ebil:

I have some sort of mental/phsyical block when it comes to ladders. Many's the time I have plummeted to my death as I fail to successfully engage/disengage at the top of a ladder. Guess that's more clumsy than stupid...
I have also mistakenly hurled a spy orb instead of a flash bomb as I charge into combat brandishing the blackjack. The delayed reaction as I click out of spy view and having the wrong weapon drawn (since they can quite clearly see me) ensure a sticky end.
