I had the common problem with lockpicking that Swedishman and real_oRGy had. I learned slower than them, though, and managed to play the game through twice without using them at all. YIKES!

brother_amar you're not alone with your stupidity:

Viola, swordfighting jumping spiders is easy. Find a solitary one somewhere and play with it. You'll find that it's easy to observe its attack. It looks straight at you, lifts its frontmost left leg, swoops it across its body, and back again. The forward-swoop is the dangerous part of the attack, simple enough. It rests for a full second or two after that too. So, right after it lowers its leg, stand on top of it, look straight down, and swing.
Before I found this out, I was so scared of them! In The Lost City, I ran all the way through the first cavern to the entrance hole in the roof of the city with all 5 or so of them on my tail. Either I broadheaded them, or ran.
Thinking that undead couldn't be snuck up on was a good one for me too. I did find out on my first time through Return to the Cathedral, on easy

I too didn't have any use for the flash bombs until I read on these forums what some of their uses were .....
Thief Gold Spoiler Alert!!
It took me forever to get through Song of the Caverns because I didn't grab the key and map from that crazy dude in the beginning of that level .... luckily I was smart enough to retrace my steps and found the key and map lying on the ground right in front of that raving lunatic ... <sigh> ... at least I figured it out before coming on to these forums for a hint and making an ass of myself ..... ;^")*

It took me a while before I found out you could backstab with your sword for an instant death. I only found out in the Lost City when I ran up behind a Burrick and gave it an overhead chop, the Burrick died instantly. It wasn't until I viewed the mission statistics that I found I'd done a backstab.
Even worse though is I didn't realise Hammer Haunts could be killed by a backstab. When I completed the Return to the Cathedral mission I thought I was lucky to have enough holy water/water arrows, fire arrows and mines to kill them all.

I guess a newbie shouldn't go telling what stupid things she has done but I cannot resist it...

http://www.ttlg.com/forums/ubb/smile.gifAlright. Being stupid on the first mission.
I was in the pool area area of Bafford's manor, lurking in the dark trying to figure out the amount and timing of guard patrols.
I thought I had it all figured out and I darkened as many torches I could, slipping into the hallway...then I heard a heavy door opening ahead and guard stepped in starting his way towards me.
And what did I do? Did I escape? Silently sneaked into safety? No. I crouched, right in the middle of his patrol route.

I made a silly mistake in The Lost City of Thief 1 but I'm sure such mistake won't happen to me again

http://www.ttlg.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif. I spend a lot of time trying to figure out what the Eye was instructing me to do. Anyway, he was speaking in Ole English and his voice sounded like a dying rhino on dope. When I figured out what he was trying to tell me, the task was actually damn easy! Well, I just need to improve on my Ole English then.

I didn't know the easy way to kill Haunts until someone told me, but I don't think that has to do with stupidity. On the contrary; I think it's kind of stupid they can be killed that way... I mean, they're undead. One little blow with a certain weapon and they're croaked? Same with killing an unalerted apparition using a single broadhead.

You mean, Thief is actually a game?

Honestly, for a very long time, I thought the expert setting "don't kill anyone" also meant no blackjacking! Try doing Cragscleft without blackjacking anyone! Boy was that tough! Anyhow I know now it can be done. Now I do blackjack and it's a laugh.
