Another one...
I didn't know guards could be backstabbed with a light swing (always backstabbed them with a heavy swing, which made me go slower and was more of a pain in the ass overall.

Thank you all for these tips! There's a lot here I didn't know.
Some of my stupidities...
* The only way I knew of to dispose of undead was holy water (which I discovered by accident). It's rather difficult to get from the holy water fountain on the first level you get to, up to the top on the elevator, and dispose of the guarding zombie, all inside thirty seconds! Will have to experiment with other methods.
* Took me a while to figure out the proper way to pick a lock (I'd been one of those clickclickclickclick people too)
* Completely didn't understand what a backstab was or how to do it. Just every once in a while, there'd be one listed in my stats...
Reading through this thread (all twelve pages of it, wow!) has been wonderfully educative! Thanks everyone for all the posts!

Some general stupidity: When I first played the games way back in the Stone Age, I sneaked all the way through each mission with ridiculous patience and caution. Now that I've built up some confidence, I tend to neglect a couple very important buttons on the keyboard and blunder into guards at breakneck pace.
It gets a little irritating on Expert.
Also, as S is assigned to "walk slowly" rather than "step backward," (contrary to every FPS I've ever played), every once in a while I stroll off a ledge and plummet to my death.

You know you CAN customize your keybinds? :laff:;)

I do, but it normally isn't necessary. I had quite a meltdown over the Jump/Use/Parry controls, let me tell ya right now ...

I tried to hit Esc, get my headphones off and jump across the room all at the same time and just ended up in a tangled mess on the floor.
Yeah, a week or two ago I was using a headset and it was getting dark, so I pulled off my headset and stood to go flip on the lights. Little did I know the headset's wires were wrapped around my ankle, so when I tried to walk I tripped, yanked the wires out of the computer, and wound up with my face buried in the floor.
It wasn't Thief, though. I'd never flip on the lights while playing Thief. ;)

The reverse happens to me. I'll be playing some other game and madly hitting X to go backwards and wondering why nothing is happening except losing multiple health points.

LOL...that sounds so funny. I don't use the mouse at all. My directional & movement keys are all bound to the numberpad.

Wow. Why? Isn't archery a nuisance?
pavlovscat on 11/2/2009 at 06:32
I am so old that when I started playing pc games, there wasn't a mouse! OK...maybe there was one, but not for games. Joysticks were actually still being used. I guess I was just so used to playing with keyboard, it was natural to do it for Thief.
Archery's easy. I use the Page Up/Down for looking up & down. When I started playing TDP, I had never played with a mouse before. T3 was quite a change because using the mouse works better for it. I've managed to get the hang of mouse navigation, though sometimes I still get a touch of vertigo when I move the mouse too quickly. :o:sweat:
