Hmmm. Thiefly idiocies.... Let's see.
On my first time through Thief Gold -- never played TDP -- I
* went all the way through Assassins without picking locks, because every door I tried to pick at frobbing distance turned dark -- I was too far away, cuz picking distance is less than frobbing distance.
* went all the way through the game without managing to see successful results with flashbombs -- I was throwing them rather than dropping them, and they were landing behind the enemy.
* repeatedly set off flashbombs in Farkus's shop while trying to gather supplies -- though I think that was a design error since serial frobbing of volatile items seems to work well in Thief II.
* never blackjacked enemies in the face or leg because I assumed it wouldn't work
* played the entire game without knowing that it was possible to cross metal silently through stop-n-go crouch-creeping
* played Mage Towers without learning that the hot metal plates can be cooled with water arrows -- I picked the lock on the chest in the fire tower by hopping back and forth as the plates alternated.
* spent twenty minutes looking for a secret exit in the Keeper's library in Haunted Cathedral, because I had overlooked the switch.
* tried to combat my way into the Maw, before finally deciding just to run.
I'm sure there must be more. Oh, the follies of youth....

I can't believe that noone's mentioned this one yet - or perhaps it was just me who was stupid enough to do it.
I was in Ramirez's mansion and wandering about in his bedroom after jumping in through the window when I saw a button by his bed. So, I say to myself, "I wonder what this does?" and pressed it

http://www.ttlg.com/forums/ubb/redface.gifThen there have been those times I've pressed the wrong button on my keyboard by mistake:
• I went to lean over the ledge above the pool in Bafford's and walked forward instead - Ouch!
• I have "C" as my crouch button and "SPACE" as my jump button. It is
not advisable to accidentally jump when standing on one of the metal floors in Cragscleft.
• I once took a blackjack to a sword fight - with the predictable outcome.
I reckon I could fill about a dozen pages with accounts of silly things I've done.
Oh, I also once tried to flashbomb/blackjack the Trickster in the Maw

Done the same thing Azal, the exact same button... but you had to press it, I mean, it was there...
And I was stuck in "The Sword" for 2 month, I tried to figure out how to get the information about Constantine...
*little spoiler of the sword*
after 2 month I tried all my keys on all doors once more, just to check, and of course a door opened for me...
*spoiler over*
stupid it was, but man, when I finished that level, it was true happines...

I'm a stupid and inattentive thief. I played the entire game of Thief 2 several times without noticing that the little children could not see you. I wasted a ton of time trying to sneak by those little bastards without ever stopping to look at their eyes (or their lack of eyes). There's even a note about how they save power by only using hearing, but I guess this was a little too complicated for me...

Blackjacking non-humans? Fire-arrowing zombies? Flash-bombing undead? Cooling the hot metal slabs with water arrows? I wish I'd have known these earlier, Thief1 would have been so much easier.
Abiding Dude, thanks for the information (BTW where is the note about them using hearing only). I hadn't twigged despite the fact that they often walked into me when I was in the light. This may make Sabotage at Soulforge easier (I've finally made it to the last level).
My stupidest mistake in Thief2 was originally not using the external key-code sheds in S&R. Each time I wanted to open a new bay I went all the way back up to the main office. It took forever! Fortunately after I installed the patch and played again I discovered what they were for. Also mechanical heads I have instinctively fire-arrowed and later found off-switches for. And finally not realising why some guards refused to be blackjacked (the metal ringing sound didn't clue me in until I re-read the manual and noticed the bit about full helmets with face and neck protection).

Azal, Swedishman, yup, that button got me too. It was so red and preeetttty and just begged to be pressed. Ahem. Though isn't there a button somewhere in Thief II with a label of 'Do not press' or something along that line? I have a hazy memory of not being able to resist that either and setting off an alarm...

Stupid is trying to do a Fire Arrow jump over the walls in THC. I didn't do that, fortunately.
My most stupid thing was probably in Lost City, when I kept getting whacked by that big block. I didn't figure out what it was until the fifth time

In FRAMED, I was going to disable the alarms at the front desk...when I pushed the button for the alarm.
Oops.
What was that? on 10/8/2000 at 02:26
You can blackjack burricks!
You can kill haunts!!
You can kill zombies!!!
You can knock people out after flashbombs!!!!
You can drop flashbombs!!!!!
YOU CAN CREAP ACCROSS METAL FLOORS!!!!!!
I had no idea.
I guess I've been playing the game with a lot of laterial thinking.
I think this is one of the best things about Theif, and what has kept it alive past its use by date (does anyone still play Quake 1?). The fact that you can complete each mission many times and still find news things to do with your equipment.
