TLJ wasn't that big of a break from nostalgia. Somewhere between TFA and TLJ, the First Order grew into another Empire, and by the end of TLJ we had another Darth Vader in charge, running an attack on the rebel base with Imperial walkers. The remaining rebels get out at the last minute and are off to run and hide. Also, there's now a bond of sorts between Ren and Rey and each of them believe they can turn the other. And the sith apprentice kills his master in his lair in order to save the newbie jedi. And the old jedi master sacrifices himself to distract Vader/Ren while the rebels escape. Those plot points seemed awfully familiar to me.
I agree it followed plot beats from various parts of the franchise, which is what I meant by saying it was grounded in the mythology. It did also subvert some of those in terms of execution - Episode VI had Vader turn back to good, whereas TLJ shows there really isn't that much conflict in Ren as to which side he belongs to. The sith apprentice killing his master here wasn't so much to save the newbie Jedi as it was compounded by a lust for power - which Rey's got a metric ton of. The Jedi master sacrificing himself after teaching his apprentice just about nothing is executed in a fashion that's pretty spectacular (and grossly incompatible with established Jedi capabilities for people who have a bugbear with this).
As for the rebels, well, yes. I suppose they only exist to be the perennial underdogs in danger of being trampled underfoot. I don't think that's going to change, since raising them into a force to be reckoned with would substantially reduce the audience's investment in them in the conflict, or making them just as bad/worse than the bad guys would just make it all a bit of a mess without another three-movie strong arc.

Early reviews are coming in, and it's getting very average scores.
Guy playing Han Solo - Meh
Emilia Clarke - Average, but better than her Terminator Genisys performance. She should just stick to Game of Thrones.
Donald Glover - Excellent performance
His robot sidekick - Excellent
Woody - Good, but does a very standard Woody Harrelson style performance.
Yeah I'll wait till it's on TV.

I've read opposite - that Solo is good but Lando seems a bit meh, and almost "Troy from Community"-like.

Huh, that's surprising. I've heard good and bad things about Solo, but everything I've heard so far about Lando/Glover is that he practically steals the movie.

I was expecting this movie to be a total critical flop, but so far I haven't seen any negative reviews of it... which is a nice surprise! I can't see how a film like this could even be a 5-star classic, so I'm quite okay with an average but entertaining space-action-film. Too bad that they didn't chose the guy that Wynne mentioned for Han Solo's role, but I guess they had their reasons. :)

Both Film Fury and the Angry Joe Show gave it a 5 out of 10
