I saw Solo last week, I thought it was very good and a lot of fun. Far better than TLJ in my opinion, and I'm a SW nerd. The problem is, if you read the reviews out there, you'll probably take a pass. I recommend if you are a Star Wars fan at all, ignore the critics and just go see it. There are a lot of nods to the previous films and the history referenced in them, but even without that the movie holds up on it's own. I'm not saying it's an all time classic or anything, but its fun without being too overly serious like TLJ.
As a casual viewer, even my wife liked it, and she's not into the SW geekdom in any way.

It kept me entertained for 2 hours. Fun, albeit completely unncessary.

You could say that about any of these side stories though, the "unnecessary" part. Rogue One and Rebels are no different. But that doesn't mean they are any less entertaining.

I think it's profoundly weird to speak of Star Wars films in terms of necessity at all. FFS NONE OF THEM ARE NECESSARY. Lol.

If any are "necessary", I'd say the original trilogy would be. Rest no.

Oddly enough, Rogue One was my favorite of all the "new" Star Wars films. I thought, for what it was, it was really well done and did a nice job in providing a backstory leading up to the events of the first film (which is really episode four...but since we have an episode one through three that provides an even further backstory to episode one, what does that make Rogue One? Episode Zero??).
Even with that, the problem is Star Wars has never truly had anywhere relevant or necessary to go after the first three films. Everything else since has been unnecessary origin stuff with the new storylines bordering on 'kicking-a-dead-horse' or 'milking-a-franchise-for-cash' material-wise.

Rumor has it (
http://collider.com/star-wars-spinoffs-on-hold/?utm_source=twitter&utm_campaign=collidersocial&utm_medium=social) Lucasfilm are putting future spin-off movies on hold, probably because of Solo's underwhelming box office results.
Ep. 9 is coming out first December 2019, so I'm not sure why they didn't wait with releasing Solo next December. Personally speaking, part of why I didn't see Solo is because it came so soon after Ep. 8. Gimme another 6 months and I might've had a hankerin' for more Star Wars even if it's mediocre.

I'm getting burned out from all the Star Wars movies. Their milking it too much + far too much of the new movies are bad ones, which is not helping.

I guess they thought that Star Wars(anything)= massive profit, they should have stuck to the star trek fans, SW afficiandos are way more critical.

If Star Trek had had a Jar Jar equivalent they'd be just as critical.
