Apologies if this has been discussed before, but I'm new here and I can't find anything similar. What I'd like to know is, what do people think about the Grays? Are they really aliens, or just constructs? Most, but not all, of the evidence I've seen suggests they're fakes, but if so, where did the antimatter reactors come from? That seems like technology somewhat beyond what is available in the rest of the game. Anyay, opinions, anyone?

Yah, there are spoilers up ahead once again.
I think the grays are what one of the e-mails (or was it a log?) claim. Waste products made by the UCs which made a rapid evolution for some reason and spit out these things.
Hair is a rudiment for humans, we no longer actually need it. So what if the grays really are monkeys without hair? What if in the future even monkeys have no need for hair and the amount of radiation has increased dramatically? However I don't think the UCs can predict a massive nuclear meltdown and thus the radical increase of radiation would be due to natural reasons? So in the future monkeys would have no need for any hair and would also have adapted to the high radiation environment ~ gray.
However all that might be an even larger conspiracy, made by the alien grays who act primitively only to hide their true business and intelligence.
Yes, you have a grand point with the anti matter reactors. This leads to a third choice and the 2nd one involving aliens. Roswell (that's to cliche, I know), alien spaceship, MJ12, captured ship. But however that doesn't logically explain why there are grays in the Hong Kong Versalife labs. This might point to the fact that there was a recent crashdown. Then again the anti matter reactors have been there for a long time and the gray on VL's "autopsy" table is very fresh looking.
As a personal conclusion I'd stay with the "recent UC waste product" theory and believe that the anti-matter reactors are just human inventions. Remember how Tracer Tong mentions them and isn't surprised at all... maybe Tong's an alien  , wanting to severely push back Earth so that humans would never discover the aliens intentions and so on?!
This makes me want to stick with the Illuminati.
"Paranoia's a drug. You can get addicted." Yes sir, that most certainly is true.

Your probably right, if only because Deus Ex doesn't seem like it should have aliens in it, it would be odd to have the whole thing about ancient conspiracies and then throw in aliens. The only thing that made me think they could be genuine was the antimatter, and I suppose it's not impossible that they're one-of-a-kind prototypes, that would explain why no-one really seems to understand them. A couple of times I've made the mistake of thinking the game is set much closer in the future than it actually is, which probably explains it.

Ummm, I think there was a log that said the greys were mutated cows, but I may be misremembering.
As for the antimatter reactors...ever heard of a PET scan? I.e.:Positron Emmisions Tomography. Yup, modern day scientists are at this very moment using antimatter to research brain tumors. Can reactors be far behind?
Deo Volente on 21/8/2001 at 02:11
I know very little about advanced physics, but I'm fairly sure that scanning for positron emissions is very different from harnessing antimatter. Using it to scan something directly would by my reasoning anhilliate it. Which does make me wonder how big the hole left after the detonation of the reactors is, since a matter-antimater anhilliation reaction is the most powerful explosion possible, and those reactors looked pretty big. My guess is that Las Vegas almost certainly got destroyed. (At last)

Actually, Deo, a PET scan scans for the gamma-ray emmisions that are produced when the positron and electron anihillate each other--it's used to trace the delicate capillaries in the brain where other methods lack the resolution to do it. The patient is injected with the positrons(can't quite remember how they bind them from anhilliating themselves till they get to the brain) that were freshly made in a minature cyclotron at the facility. The process is quite expensive, and is primarily used for research purposes. I got this info from a book called "Quarks, Critters, and the Cosmos"(I think thats the title at least). It's sort of a hyperscience primer for the non-genius :).
As to the reactor size, realize that most of the bulk of the reactor is for magnetic confinement equipment, and that the anti-matter would most likely be stored and used in an ionized gas form (antihydrogen) to ease handling and reduce density--thus lowering total available mass for reaction. From what I remember, 1 gram antimatter=1 H-bomb, so figure a blast about 3-4 times Hiroshima, at the most.

About the anti-matter explosion... In a nuclear explosion only a few molecules of matter are converted to energy. Given most of the energy of the explosion comes from the fusion of hydrogen atoms. But those reactors were quite large. lets say between them they only had 1 ton of antimatter in them. well using good ol' E=MC^2
(Energy = Mass * {the speed of light}^2) Mass is in grams. So 909.09kg (mass) * (3 * 10^8)^2 (Speed of Light squared) = 81800000000000000000 or 8.18 * 10^19 joules. Thats a FUCK load. I just looked it up. a kiloton yield from a nuclear device = 4.2 * 10^12 joules. so this explosion is about 19400000 times more powerful. or 19400 megatons. That is MASSIVE. the biggest nuclear device ever detonated was one by the Russians called the Monster it was only 50 megatons. so we are talking the entire united states/Canada/Mexico and maybe even Hawii. Either way the "New Dark Age" would just end all life on the planet. I'm going to go to the morally correct forum and post this stuff. oh and btw i got my numbers from a few books i've been reading, born secret, and the birth of the h-bomb. nothing classified... ;)

If I remember correctly, and it's been awhile, but I think the mechanic near the reactors alludes to it. They are the off-spring off aliens. Or clones. They have the genetics, and abilities, but since they grew up on earth, they didn't have the knowledge they would have had had they grown up with their own kind.
rozcrash on 22/8/2001 at 17:27
me being Mr. conspiracy, can tell you everything about the grays. As everyone knows, MJ12 was founded to investigate Rozwell for aliens and alien technology. From the emails you get in the game and me knowing lots of useless stuff about different conspiracies i have pieced together what probably happened.
1. MJ12 discovers the Rozwell crash site in the 1940's and finds (myth) the reactor powering the ship and an alien body inside.
2. cloning becomes feasible in 2000.
3. MJ12 clones the aliens with hosts of monkies along with some transgenic stuff so they can spiew out that toxic stuff because MJ12 is twisted.
4. sometime in the future we figgure out how to make the reactors work.
5. MJ12 thinks the alien monkies will run it for them but they have no knowledge of the technology so they can't.
6. so now MJ12 finds a new twisted approach, they use those things as guards because of their radioactive lazer thing and their large brain.
see? it was so simple. <IMG SRC="thumb.gif" border="0">

The grays are actually aliens. They were cloned from genetic material obtained by MJ12 after the Roswell crash. Since they were born and grew up in a lab, they have no knowledge of their true origin and culture and so are little better than very clever monkeys (as would we be if humans were raised in a similar environment). MJ12 has them used as guard beasts at certain facilities, noting that they add "meme redirection" to cloak whatever it is MJ12 is up to: people who may spy MJ12 activity think it's the work of space aliens.
IIRC, the slaughtered cow connection is from MJ12 using cattle to provide genetic raw material for making gray clones.
