Are there going to be decent fortifications in ArmA 2? I keep reading about it but I can't find anything. I liked OFP and ArmA, but you can't have a warfare simulation without trenches and foxholes. The only fortifications in ArmA were those crappy sandbag walls that the AI didn't know how to hide behind. There were some attempts at modding trenches and foxholes in, but they always ended up pretty awkward.
I always thought it was so weird how in a ultra-realistic military simulation, everyone was stuck running around out in the open. In a real war it doesn't take long at all to dig in.

Only the German version is out at the moment, it doesn't get released anywhere else until the end of June.

P.S. Thanks to the German speakers for being beta testers for everyone else. ;)

Okay, so I tried the German version, just for the fuck of it. My PC is P4 3,0GHz, 2GB RAM, x1950pro with the CPU well under minimal system req. To my biggest surprise, the game is finely playabe with all settings on minimum and 800x600. The graphics doesn't bother me so it's cool. Gives 15-20 fps when busy, 30-40 when just sightseeing, which is fine for me.
I played a single mission and the first mission of the campaign, and it's very good so far. The animations are great, the AI definitely seems to be better than in ArmA. I only encountered a few graphics artifacts, but nothing serious.
The only thing that really annoys me is the blur. I hate motion blur and you can't turn it off - very funny combined with head bob. Plus you have this stamina blur or what - basically you run 10 meters and you see everything a little bit blurrier, and it takes a few seconds for everything to sharpen. Fuck that. And it's quite headache inducing after a while, and I never get headaches from games. Luckily, lot of people are complaining about it, so hopefully you'll be able to turn post processing off in some later version.
So all in all, the game is cool, me likes.
And if you haven't thought about a Hunter vs Rabbit multiplayer scenario - it is now the time: :D

Kegetys (the OFP & ArmA modding guru) has released a small mod to ease the blur:

Since there might be Arma 1 players in this thread, I have a couple of questions:
- How easy is it to get into multiplayer as someone who's okay at multiplayer? Would I need lots of downloads that are community musts? How friendly or forbidding is the community towards MP newbies?
- Is there any way I can turn the effect down that you get when you look roughly in the direction of the sun? I understand that staring into the sun would be pretty blinding, but during daytime half the time the screen almost goes white when the sun's just barely in my field of vision.

From what I understand, most ArmA1 servers now run the realism mod, ACES. ACES 2 is currently in development for ArmA2.

Seen it earlier. Impressive, but I wish some of these guys actually tried to play instead of just running and looking around.
