Heh. As if gaming journalism in dead tree media format has any social relevance these days.

Thing is, if they a) were consistent in their criticism of bugs and didn't give the Oblivions and GTA4s (both games that I enjoy, but definitely not posterboys for unproblematic releases) a slap on the wrist while coming down on the smaller companies like a ton of bricks, b) were intelligent (or, more likely, honest) enough to make a distinction between publishers and developers and c) realised that their inability to differentiate means that they favour mainstream sameyness over more unique gaming experience, I would be much more in agreement with them. It is a real shame that gamers have to act as beta testers much of the time - but the issue is much more complex than these mags let on.

maybe they didn't get any nice promo material ?
anyways, most german gaming magazines feature inept writing, sometimes even downright WRONG facts and who's seen some of their video-reviews for their e-magazine-counterparts asks himself how those people are sometimes able to hold a controller or memorize the keys at all. I would never, ever read any Gamestar article.

Yeah... My problem is that I'm still nostalgic about old-school Gamestar and its predecessor(s) - at the beginning, they had some good, fun, critical reviewers. (One of them went on to work for LucasArts, doing the German translations of several of the classic point&click adventures.)
And I know that the best way not to get angry at their lack of journalistic integrity would be not to read them. It just pisses me off that they pretend to have this integrity by getting hyper-critical when it comes to games like ArmA 2 or STALKER. There's a lot that can be criticised about these games, including their buggy state at release, but it's disingenuous at best not to acknowledge the unique things these games have to offer.
Anyway - I should be downloading the ArmA 2 demo pretty soon. Still playing the previous game (and the OFP TC) and enjoying it a lot... although I just played the classic mission "Saboteur" and was fucked royally by them changing one small thing: in the original game I was able to board a T-80 in the enemy camp and turn its weapons on the Russians. Good times were had by all (i.e. me). In the TC, that's no longer possible. Realistic, perhaps, but much less cathartic than blasting the camp into little bits with their own tank.

Another thing: Why the fuck am I stuck in third person and unable to rotate the camera once I open my parachute?
