I have a Sweex external 7.1 sound card hooked up to Logitech T7900 and it gives me surround sound in even very old games ... apart from this one. Does anyone know if there's some special setting somewhere that may help? I can switch EAX on and OpanAL on or off and can choose any amount of sound channels but nothing helps.
Kind of difficult to play like this in just stereo sound :(

No surround option that I'm aware of built into the engine. You could try adjusting sound/audio in windows for 4 channel stereo for two in front and two in back. That's how I run one of my thief computers. The only other thing I could think of is a sound card setting for Pro Logic to extrapolate surround from a stereo source but I'm not sure how well that would work with the game.
Though I prefer speakers many swear by headphones as the only way to go. The do work a treat.
The sound channels has noting to do with surround. It just adjusts the maximum number of different game sounds that can play at one time. You should set it to the maximum number available.

What kind of sound card do you have, and what do you have the speaker configuration set to in Window's Speaker settings or your audio control panel?

Surround sound in the Dark Engine is only possible with EAX (or OpenAL, I suppose). I've tested this a couple of times back then.
