I think I'm going to wait on this one until it's $10 on Steam, bundled with the Henry Rollins DLC.

I think what made the first games so good was how simple they were.
I think the reason I can't get myself to play more than an hour two of Brotherhood is because they took the criticisms of "it's repetitive" (which the first one, especially was) and instead of adding variety while keeping the core gameplay, they added a bunch of GTA gamified nonsense that I don't give a shit about and certainly don't want to have to spend 2/3 of a game playing tutorials of. It's a shame, because the whole "Truth" thing from AC2 had me hooked.

That's a pretty solid criticism of Brotherhood.

Call me shallow, but I just like the gameplay and settings. I don't really care for the story of 99% of games because it always has and continues to be inferior to other media for story-telling. If I want story, I'll read a book. For games, I just want to lose myself in an alternate reality for a bit. AssCreed games have done that for me, though I do admit they have over-used the formula. That said, this has made me want to fire up Brotherhood again and finish it.
... Ah! So I'm not alone in abandoning the plot of AC and just settling for exploration, looting, assassination, and gorgeous scenery.

I think what made the first games so good was how simple they were. The atmosphere was realistic and believable. It was nice to just wander about and experience things without having a crazy plot shoved down your throat.
I agree, but I actually found the first AC a bit
too simple! The atmosphere was superb and the game looked absolutely stunning back then (in my opinion anyway), but there wasn't really much you could actually do. You just killed one bad guy after another and climbed to all these towers to get the synch points or whatever, but it all got a bit too repetitive after a while.
So when I eventually got to play AC2, I thought that it was quite a big improvement over the first game. The new "side quests" were all very simple (but mostly quite fun) as well, but at least they gave the player something more to do. The game was more about story than AC1, but it didn't go too over the top with it like the latter games (not that I've even played AC3). Oh, and I loved the locations in AC2. :)

And in case those aren't enough, Ubi just recently unveiled the HD-version of AC:Liberation! Here's the first trailer!

It's a PS Vita game that's coming to 360/PS3/PC sometime next year and I think it looks alright, but I really need half a bazillion more trailers more before I can make my mind up if I wanna buy it or not! DONT FAIL ME NOW UBI! :U

Ok so I played this game for like 2-3 hours so far and it tells me I am 4% done with the game (but then, I am known to be one of the slowest people on planet Earth).
I only played Assasins Creed 1 before hand which I abandoned maybe 1/3 through cause it just bored me and I pretty much explored everything the gameplay would offer me (or at least I had no new axperiences after like 1-2 hours in the game).
This one I like more though. The gameplay is sitll pretty much the same, except perhaps more refined and I love how foolproof the whole le parkouring is. I can just run mindlessly and press the le parkour key and climb to some crazy places and it's still pretty much impossible to die. I like the ship battles too. And most of all I like the new world aesthetic that the game pulls off. And the water is super blue... I only don't like the visual look of protagonist - both his ugly blonde hair and his retarded hoodie that is kept solely because that's the icon of Assasins Creed. I guess Ubisoft feels the need to "guarantee" quality or something by still calling their games Assasins Creed, but they obviously want to make different games now.
Anyway... I only played 4% so maybe I'll get bored from repetition again. But at least this time the environment is more interesting and aesthetically pleasing to me.
Edit: Oh, and I love how you can just murder a couple of enemies randomly on the street in literally a second and walk away like it was nothing. Pretty funny.
EditEdit: And the story seems fairly good too. The protagonist's motivation is quite clear and believable too. I mean, I can understand greed. Heh. Other characters are neat too. While the first game stayed way more true to the title, I didn't care for its story really. Maybe I hadn't given it enough of a chance, who knows.

Naah, storywise you didn't miss out of much with AC1 (or any of the games really). I've been hearing good things about AC4. Alec Meer at RPS says it's the best Assassin's Creed yet. I'll probably pick it up and play it around christmas.
