I just read (
https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2018/10/12/dont-forget-about-bayek-when-youre-kissing-kassandras-feet/) this article on RPS about the protagonist from AC:Origins, and I agree with everything in it (including Bayek being the dadliest of men). One of the things I've always found wanting in the Assassin's Creed games (or any Ubisoft game, really) is a well-rounded, well-written protagonist. There have been decent attempts, but they generally land on the 'functional' side of things, without any real human depth in the ongoing revenge narrative (and most of these games are about revenge). Not so Bayek - who in the game's opening threatens to be a walking blister that squirts rage at the nearest enemy target
à la every AC ever, but immediately after that dispenses with the one-note fury and shows his capacity for being a loving husband and protector of the people, able to make jokes with friends and play with children despite the undercurrent of anger and tragedy in his life.
I was fucking astonished, to tell you the truth. I still am, a little bit. I wasn't sure why I was encountering a protagonist I genuinely
liked in an AC game outside of AC4, but there you have it: actual character writing in a Ubisoft game. It's a sight to behold (as is the lack of icon spam and lists of checkboxes to tick off and bars to fill). Ezio's charisma from AC2, in comparison, just comes off as shorthand for 'I'm a person because I'm charming, so be charmed!' The rest of the game may fuck this up (or more realistically, be a let-down and a slog past a certain point), but the opening hours I've played put enough work in the right places (actual, contextualised sidequests!) beyond just recreating Egypt that I'm looking forward to more time with Origins.

I have to confess that I didn't watch that video, but from what I've heard Odyssey isn't more of a grind or much more MMO-style than Origins was - and that one already didn't feature the Assassins and Templars but their predecessors, which supposedly is also the case for Odyssey. Chances are that if you didn't like Origins or didn't consider it an Assassin's Creed game, this one will evoke the same reactions, just more strongly. If you did like Origins and were absolutely okay with it as an Assassin's Creed, you'll be fine with this one. But there definitely isn't a clear break between Origins and Odyssey.

The antagonists in Odyssey are "proto" Templars.

This guy did the math and the game is absolutely a grind. The game seems balanced for the 2x XP boost micro-transaction.

So the people who are playing it and enjoying it without the XP boost, and who find that their regular activities leave them strong enough, are lying?
There is no mathematical formula for grind. What some people consider regular play, others consider grind. Turning this into a mathematical formula strikes me as silly.
Which doesn't mean that some, or even many, players might not find the game grindy - but there are absolutely lots of players who don't touch the XP boost and enjoy the game as is.

The anecdotal evidence that I've seen is that things slow down to a crawl once you hit lv. 30.

Odyssey is so progressive, it has representation of autistic people.

I saw this video today and it inspired me to go back and look up the leaks from 2016 concerning Origins.

Much of the 4chan leaker's information about Origins was bang on the nose. They even set the next game (Odyssey) in Ancient Greece directly after having one in Ancient Egypt. If they're doing an "ancient trilogy" it would make sense to do the Roman Empire because they can recycle assets from Origins and Odyssey.
Quote:
I'd heard last year from three different people familiar with goings-on at Ubisoft that the next big Assassin's Creed would be set in ancient Egypt. Since this morning, two other independent sources have contacted me to corroborate that. I heard about the code name Empire from two of those sources. Three of them told me the game would indeed launch in 2017.
Months ago, one source told me the game would also take place in ancient Rome, although that may have changed; the 4chan poster says some sections had been removed from the game. ("There are talks about making a trilogy of this same character, so they might explore Greece/Rome next," the poster wrote.)Ancient Rome would be an entirely different beast from Renaissance era Italy from the Ezio trilogy, so that'd be great to see.
Hopefully for a truly next gen (PS5) AC we can finally get feudal Japan.

Currently playing the Assassin's Creed Origins: The Hidden Ones DLC. It's solid content that feels like an extension of the full game. I'm definitely enjoying it.
I've played all of the existing AC Odyssey premium expansion DLCs to date and those were good too. I don't know why Ubi seem to get AC DLCs (at least for the last couple games, haven't played anything prior since AC2) so right yet produce hot garbage expansions for Far Cry 5 and Ghost Recon: Wildlands.
I had unlocked all prior SP achievements in FC5. Dead Living Zombies was so utterly terrible, I had no further motivation to grind through it after I'd finished the mission content to get all of the new chieves.
