No, not really comparable to thief or hitman. I've only ever played prince of persia demos, but I hear it's more comparable to that. It's all about running and climbing, most of which the game does for you (i.e. you run towards the ledge, altair will jump off and grab the next building).
It's still lots of fun. There's no need to be stealthy, but sometimes it helps, and usually it's more fun to try to be.

Not even a bit. Assassin's Creed is quite lame, actually. Once I realized that stealth consists of either jumping into a pile of hay, sitting on a bench (that always has one free spot for you on it), or putting your hands together as if praying, I lost interest fast. Maybe it gets better once you move on, but for all its free-climbing it feels rather un-emergent. Deadly Shadows in 3rd person is a much better game.

No but really, the game does have very obvious content flaws, and a few execution flaws (take a few pages from MGS and Thief and include evasion that doesn't involve stupidity, a timer and some line of sight fleeing should do the trick), but I still really enjoy playing it. It's frustrating the first time around, because you watch trailers like (
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/19860.html?type=) this and expect the game to be the second coming, but it's not. It's a great game sure, it could have easily been way better had the developers spent just a bit more time fleshing out the content so it wasn't repetative, and the stealth functions could have easily been remedied by thinking about it just a little bit more, but what is there is tons of fun and looks great.
What I am hopeful for is that they take note at what they did wrong and fix it in the sequel. There isn't much that needs to be remedied to make this game as good as it should have been.
But again, having said that, I still love the game and hope more people give it a try without expecting what was initially hyped. It's still a lot of fun.
