They really need to pull out all the stops and dramatically change things after the piece of shit that was Revelations.
Malleus on 3/3/2012 at 11:28
Not likely, since (they say) this one has been in development for three years. I bet it's the same thing with minor changes (and without tall buildings). The best we can hope for is that they at least take out the goddamn tower defense minigame (though not sure why I speculate, I didn't even finish Revelations, not sure if I'll even try this one). On the other hand, at leat there won't be any language inconsistencies this time - english for everyone!

According to that first link a.) it's still taking place in cities (New York and Boston) but with a much more interesting frontier area b.) there's no tower defense and c.) I'm pretty sure the French don't speak English (the game starts in the 1750's). If they're being authentic the Mohawk really shouldn't speak English either.

Ha! I forgot about the French, indeed. Though I wrote that because they always went with the 'english with accent with native phrases thrown in' which got tiresome in Rev for me (previous two played nicely with Italian VO set) - this would have been no problem if everyone spoke english.
EDIT: As far those cities go, I'll still miss climbing tall buildings (pretty sure there were no huge cathedrals and stuff in there back then) if I play this.

The screenshots thus far remind me heavily of MGS3, which is in no way a bad thing.

I was thinking Skyrim myself. Those frontier scenes are awesome. I'm really pumped for this setting; I just hope they still manage to squeeze in the French and Russian revolutions into the series somewhere too (I guess a French Revolution based game could use this protaganist too).
I've had Brotherhood and Revelations for ages and haven't been in a mood to play them but this news is going to move them significantly up the queue.

Brotherhood's my favourite game in the whole series, while Revelations is my least favourite.
I think you can get away with playing Brotherhood then watching some Let's Play stuff on Youtube for Revelations. The only stuff it "Reveals" is some interesting info about Altair.

I've got the first three games on Steam and yet to finish the first one. Will do at some point.
Backlogs :/

EDIT: (
http://www.computerandvideogames.com/338520/assassins-creed-3-gets-first-trailer-ubisoft-talks-up-revolutionary-new-game-engine/) Interesting tidbit from Ubi's PR.
Quote:
Ubisoft has described the game as the largest project in the company's history. Developed by Ubisoft Montreal in collaboration with six other first party studios, it has been in the works for over three years with twice the production capacity of any previous title from the publisher. Get the official blurb below the video.
Assassin's Creed III is powered by Ubisoft-AnvilNext, a revolutionary new game engine that delivers breakthroughs in visual quality, character models and artificial intelligence. Assassin's Creed III will feature a ground-breaking level of stunning graphics that bring Colonial America to life.
If only other publishers dared to take risks and put in extra effort like this with their cash cow franchises. *cough* CoD *cough* Sure they don't have to if they're making money hand over fist, but they'd have a better reputation in general and it'd be good idea in the long term. (Stagnation = eventual fatigue from the press and many consumers. Case in point:- the reception received by AC: Revelations.)
