HEY! How about a frickin' AUTO-SAVE at the beginning of each level? Just about every other decent FPS and RPG out there has it, and it can't be THAT hard to implement, because the game is saving the info from the previous level at each change anyway. Deus Ex is ridiculous in that it can conceivably send you back all the way to the beginning of the game from the final leval if you hadn't saved somewhere in-between.
