Show us exactly what you entered for the property.

Yes, we need detailed informations. Or you could upload the mis/cow (including the books folder) and note the object number of the readable.

A link to the zip with the cow file and books folder was e-mailed to each of you (Larry and Fib). The starting point is in a hallway where there are several doors with the troublesome signs above them. Thanks for trying to help me with this.

Yes, you're right. I loaded it in ND 1.21. The signs (at least the toilet sign, because there's the text file in the zip) is working.
But it doesn't work in ND 1.23 any more.
Since you're using the buggy dedx-gam, I loaded dedx and made the sign in ND 1.21, tested it in ND 1.23. It's working fine.
Looks like there's something wrong with the gen.osm or with the player. But I already made a new starting point and dropped/loaded the scripts again.
That's a mystery. This needs more testing.
btw, a GoldPlaque or a scroll is working fine.
Edit: After dropping and loading all the scripts again, It's working with an original text (M02B02). So there's an issue with your str files and ND 1.23
2nd edit: I rather think DromEd can't read from the books folder. I've put a random strings folder there. Now it's working fine.
So drop and reload all scripts and put a strings folder in your T2/FM-folder

Do you have a /strings folder in the 1.23 installation, Jeanne? Because books won't work at all if it's missing, even if there's nothing in there.

I'll take a look at it later today & let you all know what I can find.
I can say that I have absolutely no problems with 1.23 and books in my current mission. So maybe I can track down what is what.

Thank you so much for taking the time to deal with this, even though I have yet to finish anything I started (except for those missions where I can manage to buddy up with others). The DedX gam file will tell you how long I've been working on some of these solo missions. These days I start with just DARK and build item by item.
I do have a Strings folder, but thought that was only for naming objects that might need later translating into other languages?\
Anyway, I'll try your suggestions, and let you know how it goes.

HUZZAH! The signs are working now! So when I upgrade an older mission to New Dark123, I need to transfer my english folder out of Books and place it in the Strings folder. That's easy enough. Have to wonder why, though.
Thanks a bazillion, Fib - and Larry, too!
Now to continue with my hopeless bumbling ...

Red: No you just need a /strings folder, just as Yandros and fibonocci said. I tried your mission and once I found your signs (you really are doing things the hard way, but that's what you are comfortable with, I guess), I added your str files in my books directory and they worked just fine. This is nothing new to NewDark. You always had to have a /strings file, even if it is empty. If you want to put your books there, I guess there is no reason not to ... maybe ...
Yandros on 17/9/2015 at 04:07
I'm surprised Dark can find them there. Is that really working?
No, Jeanne, you don't have to move them to /strings, you can leave them in /books. What happened was you made a new install folder for 1.23 and moved them over in /books, but you didn't make a /strings folder (since you didn't need to yet), and they didn't work because for some reason Dark (both Old and New) require a /strings folder to be present in order for it to be able to read anything in the /books folder. You don't even need anything in there, although you will eventually need to have at least missflag.str when you start playing the mission through Thief2.exe. This has always been the case, not something new with NewDark.
