R350 core on my 9800 PRO as well. Great sky. No tweaking involved.

It's more involved than that.
If you care to:
1. (
http://www.fraps.com/download.php) You can use FRAPS to capture a screenshot (probably best to use a low resolution, like 640x480, so you don't need to resize).
2. (
http://www.herculesoft.com/gc/index.htm) Convert the BMP over to a JPG.
3. (
http://www.pictiger.com/) Upload the image to a free host and post the url.
4. Run dxdiag or msinfo32, and post the entire output in this thread (msinfo will generate a massive output, and you might have to split it across a couple of posts).

ejsmith, we're still waiting for you to explain what problem you're experiencing with the sky on your Radeon 9800 in the first place!
ejsmith on 22/1/2006 at 23:25
It's the "ugly sky", same as everyone else has. Same thing that's in the picture above.
And using that 8-bit kindergarten one (by turning the sky off in the options) isn't the answer. :laff:
I'm looking for the puffy white clouds rolling by a very bright full moon.

Check out this post, in my long-ago discussion of ugly-sky vs ugly fog. Perhaps you have a similar setup (Anti-aliasing turned on to "High Quality" might be causing the ugly sky. It looked just like Nvidia ugly sky, honest - I had to take down the pictures a while ago because of webspace limits.)

BUT, right now, I've got a Radeon 9600XT, and using RadLinker 2.033, I set the thing to 6x antialiasing (6xT3, which is the Highest quality) , and it's still a nice looking sky.
Perhaps you should try turning off antialiasing, and anisotropic filtering and see if the sky looks good then, and then start turning the graphics options up after that, and see if and where it "breaks" the sky.

But isn't that fog still crappy and condensed, not a smooth gradient like it should be? I tried to deal with the fog problem before with a Radeon 9700 (good card), in this thread

Can you show me a screenshot of Dwelling Insanity using a Radeon card with Omega drivers?
I don't use Omega drivers, because I'm too lazy to try them out, but PinkDot (Glyph Contest winner) uses Omega drivers with ATI Tray Tools v1.0.3.730, and claims that the fog is just as good as Nvidia's (if not better).
ejsmith on 24/1/2006 at 20:16
I believe I use the Omega's. I know for certain that I don't use the straight Catalysts. I might still be using the DNA's, but the ATI AI selection is available, so it's got to be Catalyst 5.x or above.
Fog looks great. There's a real gradient to it, although it might be a little lower than the Nvidia's card, overall.
Komag on 25/1/2006 at 02:40
Could you please do the honors of loading up Dwelling Insanity and snapping a screenshot looking up in the tower? That way we can all see and compare, and it might seriously affect my next graphics card decision

I checked my fog in Dwelling Insanity but there's no need to post a screenshot... :( I have to say, that my fog looks as crappy as all ATI cards, even with Omega drivers. The reason I was thinking it looks OK is that I had the same crappy fog on my old GF 4 MX. I even didn't realize that Thief can have really smooth nice fog, until I saw the screenshots with GF 6800 in (

Out of curiousity, are there any pics floating around of ati vs. nvidia in reference to fog and sky? Thx!
