If you say you`ve managed to get it to work on this machine before, it means something changed within the Windows. Try reinstalling video drivers/direct X first, if this fails - time to reinstall the system. It`s a brute force method, but the only one to be sure things are "clean".
Once you reinstall, try vanilla Thief on vanilla Win (only latest drivers - before net, firewalls etc...). If it works you can start adding stuff...

Hi,
Thanks for that. I have installed ddfix and the necessary pre-patched .exe file to make ddfix work. I now receive an error 'Directx 7 needs to be installed', which appears to mean from reading the forum that ddfix.ini file is missing from the game directory.
I currently have the following files:
- ddfix
- ddfix.dll
- ddfix 1.3.11 readme file
Am I perhaps missing something? I may try a clean install soon as suggested.

"Extract ddfix.dll and ddfix.ini to the same directory as thief2.exe"
I can't seem to find the ddfix.ini file

OK so I wiped the original install of Thief 2 from the system and reinstalled using Tafferpatcher. I then applied for a full installation of Tafferpatchers updates / fixes.
I am now back to that situation of not being able to load the game. When I minimise the game to shut it down via ctrl-alt-tab, I check the affinity and only one CPU is assigned.

Success! I managed to actually load the game by removing the movie file from the game directory, maybe this was causing a conflict?

Thanks for the help, but after taking this long to get it up and running I am more than happy to watch the movies manually!! :-)
BTW, does anyone know any good texture updates? Are they worth it? I installed the enhancement pack and the objects look great
