Do you have the slightest conception of how much work that would have involved?
Yes. And I would have paid more accordingly.

Some first impressions as I have only just got out of Candlekeep...
On the plus side of things:
- the game looks beautiful on the iPad 3's retina screen;
- being able to pinch and zoom and flick my way around the map just feels so fluid and natural;
- the extra pause options actually make turn-based combat a viable option and less annoying than the original.
Unfortunately, it's also a little buggy in parts although the first bug worked in my favour as I got the game without having to pay for it (probably Apple's fault). For some reason my only option via the iTunes store was to update rather than purchase the game. As a consequence, I used the money I saved to splash out on the DLC.
As far as actual game bugs are concerned, the screen sometimes fails to refresh if I go out of the game and go back into it, resulting in a black screen. There is also an issue I have been facing where it becomes difficult to go through doors into new areas. This was often an issue in the original but seems to be even worse now as I have to click repeatedly on some doorways before I get placed into the new map.
So far the iPad seems like a solid choice for this type of game. If it's successful I would love to see its sequel as well.

Yup. The game looks and plays beautifully on the iPad. Almost to the point that I actually prefer the touchscreen controls over the old mouse and keyboard in some ways. I do have some problems with the game though, which I'll list below...
-It is buggy. While it isn't constant and annoying, you should expect the game to bounce you back to the...er...desktop at least once every 2-3 hours. Mostly it happens while I'm reloading a game, though I have experienced one or two CTDs.
...and when clicking Boo in Minsc's inventory. That's a guaranteed crash right there. Without fail.
-The framerate drops when casting spells. Throw out a round of ensnaring vines, and you'll see the framerate drop to single digits while it's onscreen. Considering the iPad 3 is about 250x more powerful than the computers we were running BG2 on back 2000, there's really no excuse for it.
-No feedback on clicks, which I mentioned previously. Most of the time it's not a problem. You tell your guys to do something, they'll do it 99 times out of 100. Plus there's a button you can hit to highlight stray loot and containers while it's held down (I believe it's similar to holding the tab key in BG2). Only problem is, it only highlights loot and containers. If you want to know if stairs or climbable or if a door is interactive, you have to find out by trial and error. Nevermind doors hidden by the scenery.
Basically, it feels rushed a bit and late betaish. None of the problems are show stopping or inherit to the platform, and can easily be fixed with a patch or two. But they are annoying, and do present a caveat to an otherwise solid package.
Still, it's enough to get me looking forward to BG2 and the rest of the Infinity Engine games on the iPad. Hell, maybe I'll actually beat BG2 this go round.
