Have played about 20 to 30 minutes of it (before leaving on holiday) and it's pretty good. Solid gameplay, smooth framerate, and the graphics look sweet. I've seen a lot of folks post about glitches and problems, and locked doors that don't unlock properly, and stuff, but I've not hit that kind of problem yet. So far, it's pretty damn sweet. Just wish I was home to play it. :-(

Gee, that's a surprise. Someone other than the creator of a "franchise" makes a sequel/prequel/addon/whatever and it's totally uninspired garbage. That never happens.
and yes I'm fully aware that BioShock 2 and most of Obsidian's games don't fit that description, those are the exceptions that basically prove the rule though

From what I'm hearing it's not garbage at all. Just retread with a few issues needing ironing out.

I'm sure it's completely competent at being a sequel/prequel/whatever, I'd be highly surprised if anything in the game seem particularly creative or inspired though. I mean, I doubt it's at the level of a third-party expansion/sequel for a Monolith game or something, although you could argue that Primal Hunt/Extraction Point/Perseus Mandate/F3AR are all completely competent despite also being incredibly awful, too.

Extraction Point is the opposite of awful.

Some of the punters on NeoGAF seem to consider it to be the best of the Arkham games.

Also: EM's DXHR, Bethesda's Fallout 3, Spark's Lost Planet 3, Bioware's MDK2, Ubi's Far Cry 2. I'd say it's not something that's common enough to be considered a "rule".

Yeah, but those aren't sequels in the sense of "using the same tech/gameplay" which is usually when sequels/expansions suck.
