DICE are opening back up the Conquest 64p Caspian Border servers for this weekend.
Quote:
After analyzing the data from our first round of closed Caspian Border tests, we have great news for participants in the Battlefield 3 PC Open Beta: the DICE team has decided to bring back Caspian Border for the beta’s final weekend and conduct an open large scale test of the 64 player Caspian Border map.
*****Please keep in mind that as this is beta we will be stress testing our servers***** As such, users may experience crashes, network instability and outages as we roll out and configure servers and network utilities. Understand that such potential issues and the testing environment are not reflective or indicative of the final product and that, through your participation, you will be helping to ensure future stability and functionality.
As we are again specifically testing 64-player server configurations, this test will be for PC only. The Caspian Border servers will be available for all PC players to join. Caspian Border will be available starting Friday, October 7th, in the afternoon (CET).

I played some of caspian border earlier today and took some screenshots.
Unfortunately, the server I was on (even though before I joined said ping was like 51) had a lot of stuttering problems. Like if you tried running, every second you'd teleport backward a bit and then forward to where you were supposed to be. (Definitely latency issue. And before you blame my internet, I wasn't the only one talking about lag on the server.)
There's still that hilarious (but also annoying) vehicle bug where the vehicle in question flips over and is like moving on its own.
Was pretty cool though, definitely felt similar to that of BF2's conquest mode. The jeep even sounded much like the one from BF2.

Oooh, I get it. So the 3D spotting was added to the series because of the vegetation and overall increase of detail on the maps? Is that it?
Supergay.

I'm really enjoying it, and I feel I have a fair bit of freedom in defining my role, tactics, taking different routes, as opposed to BFBC2s "throw the soldiers in the grinder" rush maps.
Whilst there were places on some of the rush maps that were narrower than others, I haven't seen a single map that couldn't be completely dominated by a group of people who actually co-ordinate. Most of the games that degenerate into waves of cannon fodder are because people just constantly spawn in as close to the fight as possible and repeat the same approach, usually while vehicles just sit unused at the base.
I've got mixed feelings about the beta, but I've only played Operation Metro. It's pretty fun, but it seems to have be a lot tighter than bc2 maps once the first set of mcoms are blown. Biggest problem is that it's hard to get with a good squad because everyone's just messing around to learn the game.
Still highly optimistic for the full game though. Dunno if many others here are playing on 360, but if you are auseric is my tag.

I was only talking about public servers. I totally believe that BC2 was much more controlled and tactical if you were playing with a clan or a fortuantelly coordianted team, but I almost never was, and found that my individual freedom was limited as a result. One could argue that in team-centric games individual freedom SHOULD be limited: but as someone who plays on pub servers I preferred the sort of initative that BF1942 allowed an individual.
Here, I really felt like I could do more interesting and varied things without direct coordination with my teammates than I could in BC2. The one area in which I think an individual is TOO powerful is, perhaps, the engineer. I really liked that in BF1942 the anti-tank guy was totally at the mercy of infantry; now engineers get a rocket launcher AND gun as good/almost as good as assault's. I guess that's the nature of combining classes.

No, the reason why it's hard to get with a good squad in BC2/BF3 is because both games' mechanics cater to lone wolves. Why bother squadding up when you're about just as effective on your own?

Honestly, that's basically a response to a problem with all Battlefield games and their clones. Nobody understands the concept of teamwork, so DICE don't even try anymore.

Couldn't disagree more with either of you. The only times I've seen people truly steamroll through matches of battlefield is when they're operating as a co-ordinated and balanced unit. Sometimes they're not strictly in a squad together, but at the least it's the case that a lot of people fall in behind one talented player and work with him/her and follow their lead.
I'd also argue that the game's structures also do highlight the importance of teamplay, whether it be the very squad structures themselves, the absence of a K/D ratio in the scoreboard (in bc2), or the fact that the best way to level up is to slut out your ammo kits or revive heaps of people.

BC2 most certainly has K/D on the scoreboard. I'm inclined to agree with Koki and Dethtoll, squads aren't nearly as important as in BF2/2142. In 2142 in particular, being in a squad means not only respawning on the leader, but your squad leader gets a variety of useful toys to help the squad with, doing well grants temporary gear unlocks, and sharing health is more important since you don't simply regenerate.
4-man squads is a big part of the problem, it's hard to do anything useful when the whole squad can be taken out by a good tank shot or a single Rambo with a machinegun.
