You know it just gets to the point where you, as ttlg denizens, need to sit back and ask yourself if you are contributing even a milimeter of a fuck more than I am with your oh so witty comments than I am with a thread about *gasp* gaming. There are enough of you trolls to fill a 4chan clown car. Seriously, choke on a bag of dicks. Don't fucking reply if you don't care about iOS games, I would be WAY more insulted if my thread got zero replies than a hundred loldurfdurf jaded piece of shit halfwit remarks.
This place reeks of the shit you spoon from your sphincter and toss gingerly to the point where people, good people, not shit people like me, stop coming here, or just stop attempting to stir any conversation because every valid attempt only summons a gaggle of baboons.
And this place can just submerge back into the shit sea of Ry'leah where the ravenously blue balled cthulhian ZB and Koki gods rein at nothing but sutured contusions at the seams of a dying gaming culture and a far more dead haven in said culture.
So seriously, go suck a bag of contagiously seeping dicks and stay the fuck out of the thread if you don't have anything fucking remotely nice to say.
And all this just because I made a joke about your little mistake when naming the thread
I would risk proposing that the problem here is not me, but you
Chill the fuck out.

Yet another thread derailed into oblivion. Good job, "regulars".

I see the perfect opportunity for developers, from the big companies all the way down to the indies, to make all those oldschool style games we used to know and love.
I mostly love this idea, except that I find a touchscreen to be pretty crappy for controlling some kinds of game. But all the examples you cite, ie things that on a PC would be pointer-driven, would work.
Occurs to me, I'm surprised Lemmings isn't on itunes already. I'm sure there'd be a wave of purchases from 30something nerds.

No, the touchscreen wouldn't work for everything. There's no way in hell I'd want to play a fast paced FPS on an iPad, but it's an excellent interface for turn based/ real time strategy games, puzzlers, or overhead RPGs.
Or maybe even slower paced first person RPGs like Ultima Underworld. A setup using thumb near the corner of the screen to move in cardinal directions, two fingers set near the middle of the screen to mouselook, a single finger to interact with objects in the world and your inventory, and maybe three finger swipes for combat could work pretty well if it's sensitive enough.

All the more reason to avoid it. :P

Adventure games are another genre that would work really nicely.
A problem is that i see a lot of developers trying to shoehorn popular genres like driving, shooting, traditional platformers and 3d adventure games, all of which are really unsuited to purely touchscreen devices.
The best way in order to open a lot of doors is a touchscreen phone with a slide out keyboard. And even then, that doesn't make all genres a good idea - fps would still be quite crap - although actually it may not be too bad for a system shock 1 style game control scheme. The problem though, is while it's relatively easy to use a mouse and keyboard at the same time, trying to use the touch screen on a phone while fiddling with multiple buttons on the keyboard, all the time trying to hold up the actual device you are playing on is not going to work too well. That and fingers are a lot fatter than some kind of stylus / mouse input (but do allow for multi-touch).
Also, because the keyboard would be so small it would no doubt be fiddly, so might be a bit difficult.
Arcade driving games would be okay with buttons - the accelerometer ones are just gimmicks with no precision though.
Anyway, there is potential but only for the right sort of game.

There are far worse reasons to avoid Oblivion. My personal opinion: worse than GenGaming, it's like pinching a beautiful model in the ass as you pass her by only to find out that she's just a very lifelike blow-up doll that proceeds to fart in your face and then fly out the window. -5/20
