. It felt like over half the interface was dedicated to compensating for a problem that the developers needlessly inflicted on themselves-- the realistic physics.
Would you call a realistic flight model in a flight simulator an "needless problem"? I guess Particle Systems decided that if flight sims down on earth can be realistic, why can't one up in space? (with a few concessions like direction assists).
So, probably a personal preference thing. I'm certainly not suggesting all space-sims should be so realistic. It wouldn't suit an X-Wing game. They just make an interesting counterpart to the "world war II in outer space" template.
Fafhrd: Of the four positions one is only looked at briefly for directing repairs (and you can leave that all to automatic if you want). The Commander's seat isn't used a lot either. So it's mostly a case of flicking between pilot and gunnery - I suspect the latter is the trick to mastering combat, I never got the hang of it myself.
That said I did like I-War 2's interface, quite slick.

My main problem with I-War 1 is that the corvette is a vessel with a four man crew, and the player has to be each member of that four man crew. The physics have nothing to do with it, it's just an issue with interface.
Minor quibble, in I-War 1 the corvette had a crew compliment of around 132 odd. Four command crew and various engineering and repair crews who lived in the habitat 'shells' on the back of the ship above the main accelerator ring. You only hopped around the command module consoles in game.

I never played I-War. Just thought that I should get that out of the way.
After seeing this, I immediately resumed the hunt for a copy of Freespace 2, a game that has eluded me for some time. I have a great appreciation (some would say an obsession) with the new BSG series. This mod is like something out of a dream. For several months I have been hoping that someone (in the position to actually bring these things to be) would see the sheer sexaliciousness of a new BSG-based combat sim. I was skeptical at first, seeing as how this is a mod group doing things, but it really does look as though they have their excrement piled in one place.
It may actually be released. It may actually be as fantastic as it looks. I am indescribably happy.
BSG rocks.

I love the new BSG. I love Freespace 2.
Let's get it on.
Of course, an officaly licensed New BSG would be optimal, but that's too awesome to actually happen.

There was a BSG game for the PS2. Released back in 2003 though, so it's based on the original series.

Also, word on "the street" is that it licked balls.

Just a heads up: (
http://www.game-warden.com/bsg/) the demo has been released. I haven't tried it yet but apparently it contains spoilers up to the 'Scar' episode of the second season. It's stand alone and doesn't require Freespace 2.

Just played the demo. I was quite impressed with the voice acting, up until the very end that is, when a new character showed up that forced me to turn my speakers off.
Actually, the writing and the voice acting were close to the most amusing parts of the demo. Other than that, it was like playing freespace, but with Vipers and Raiders.
Not a bad thing, mind you.
On the other hand, the part where you fight that one, final Raider who comes out of nowhere, had me going, whoa, this one is nasty ... and then when I realied it was supposed to be Scar, it made me grin like a fanboy. But then the "replacement" for the awesome CAG showed up, (after she was killed by Scar,) with his awful fake old man voice and horrible acting, and it was all ruined.
Rise from thy slumber, slough off thy necrotised flesh, cynics eat your hearts out, etc.
So apparently, a bunch of modders decided to slap us right in our bitter, jade-encrusted hearts with something unheralded: the release of an actual, honest to goodness BSG mod.
(

Beyond the Red Line died a long time ago, but this picks up after it, in a way. It doesn't look like it checks all the boxes in terms of fidelity, but the trailer makes it look like an exciting enough time. And it doesn't need FS2 as it runs on FS2Open. I haven't even played the Wing Commander Saga yet, and now this is out. Who has the time? No, really, that's an actual question. Whomever has the time, could you please play this frakking thing? I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd like to know how good or not so good this is.
