There is a big difference between asking and having a problem with something. I was merely asking. But why would I be asking I hear you reply, to which I say "Just to know why" and that is all.
That doesn't wash because if you think about it, there's only one answer to the question.
Q) Why would anyone include a gender neutral option in a video game?
a) because I cut my penis off with a filet knife by accident and want the universe to know my deep and unending pain
b) because we didn't have enough time to develop our fourth, fifth, and sixth genders that involved tea kettles and lotus seed pod body horror, so we just went with the quick vanilla option
c) tacos don't have genders, so not having it is being tacoist
d) because we wanted to be more inclusive
Which is the correct answer? Nominally, I'd like to give people the benefit of a doubt, but the only non-offensive reasons why someone would ask the question are that they haven't had enough social interaction in their lives, or they couldn't spend half a picosecond to think about it -- which aren't great either.
Edit: I see you answered the question yourself after that. Good job!

After the prolonged trolling and baiting and outright hate and bigotry, there is no longer such a thing as merely asking. And this has nothing to do with freedom of speech or censorship of different opinions, it's just a bunch of people being assholes and trying to stir up drama.

It might be easier to argue a ban is ridiculous if the question wasn't asked in bad faith so often. When enough people ask the question solely to open up a vector for their political incorrectness, it's time to bring down the ban hammer.

Just great. Now every time I eat one, I'm going to be thinking, '...but this has a penis.'

That is censorship. Pure and simple censorship.

If 'censorship' means gagging assholes who turn a discussion into a charnel house horror show of insults and general bad juju with zero actual input, I think I'm okay with that.
Not implying that you're one of them, but a loaded question that has little value on its own (nil, actually, after you've answered your own question) being co-opted by trolls is just a net negative in the end, so while it doesn't feel great having your thread shut down, it's better than just letting shit fly.

If they were female, they'd be called Tacas.

If it were just people merely asking, then yeah, it would be censorship. But you know that's not the case.
Think about it. A discussion on the Steam forums involving developers being all inclusive, opting to use gender neutral pronouns for their game? Yeah. There were people screaming about SJWs, and being all around asshats, I'm sure.
