Little story for the nostalgic. When Morrowind first came out, I completely screwed up plot and missions just be play Thief on a large scale.
Incredible heists, such as emptying the whole vault of the nobles guild to sell their suits of armor. Literally tens of trips to actually transport it all. Consider that being stealthy, in Morrowind, is not a matter of turning invisible as in WOW: if the npcs are looking in your direction, they will notice things like you stealing like mad. So you had to turn them away first, by speaking or other distractions.
I have this good memories of a tight shut room, with 4 people one in every corner, and being able to steal the gold vase in the middle on the table. At one point I stole a 800 kg hammer from a museum, to bring which I had to empower myself with a crapload of strenght spells.
Who knows, maybe one day we will get a Thief MMO which will work similarly to this.
(ok, I admit: cool story bro)

cool story bro, but I used to love thieving in Morrowind too. It was ridiculousy unpredictable, and often ordinators etc seemed to have eyes in the back of their head, but I persevered because it was such a good game and the rewards were worth the effort
I don't remember that hammer. Was that in Vivec somewhere? If I ever play it again I am going to just practice the hell out of alchemy and steal things. There's a video showing how you can become ridiculously overpowered with potions, steal a few choice items and have beaten Dagoth Ur within fifteen minutes of starting the game. I took six months to do the same thing. :D
I don't remember if the Thieves' Guild quests were any good - I guess most of the fun was in sneaking into basements and stealing people's cutlery

Telekinesis to get at items laying around, open doors and chests, mark and recall to move massive loot, 100% chameleon for the pickpocketing.
I remember the sneak indicator (an on/off indication of whether you were seen) not working properly in outdoor zones like Balmora. I also remember the thrill of taking a plant ingredient indoors and finding out that this counts as stealing and that everyone in the building is now trying to kill you.

Morrowind and Daggerfall are some of the best games I've played. I got hooked on Daggerfall when the Betony demo came out.
In Daggerfall, there were some elements that made me feel more like a thief, i.e.:
* Ability to climb walls. This was especially the case when arriving at a gated city late at night.
* Ability to bash open doors with weapons
* Unlimited missions, unlike Morrowind where the Thieves Guild will eventually run out of quests to do, in Daggerfall you can keep getting randomized missions from different templates. Admittedly, this can get boring, as you are doing the same type of quests over and over again, and if I'm not mistaken, the Thieves' Guild does not have any dungeon crawler missions. This way you really can make a career of being a Thief, and 'earn a living' (although you can become rich much faster by breaking into shops at night, stealing everything and then selling it back to the merchants).
* NPC time system - night felt like night, as NPCs were off the streets, shops were locked up, interior and exterior windows were darker/lighter and NPCS were missing (presumably sleeping, although they weren't on their beds).
That said, levitation is a lot more practical than climbing, and you can buy a cheap open door spell (with the spell maker) that opens any exterior doors. The lockpick (steal function) is a lot more restricted as you only get one chance to open a door (I think you can rest and come back later), otherwise the guards will come to your attention.
I read that the developers were going to implement a rope system, to let players climb down from rooftops.
Morrowind obviously has its advantages, interior NPCs are no longer static (invincible, doesn't react at all), but will fight you if they find you stealing items. Items in buildings are unique and can physically be seen, rather than generic looking shelves and boxes. In addition, by sneaking around with spells, you could have a good chance of stealing items from a shop. In Daggerfall, it's near impossible to steal items when a shop is open. In Morrowind I also don't think you could sell stolen items back to the merchants as they would alert the guards?
I've got a lot of mods for Morrowind installed, including for NPC schedcules, so most shops during the night are locked.
Both brilliant games, but very different.
Daggerfall being very open ended (unlimited quests), but also very generic with nearly all places being cookie cutter locations. Morrowind with specific quests and unique places, which are very special and rather alien, i.e. Telvanni and Redoran infrastructure.

I don't really like being a Thief in Morrowind. This is because of the item ownership system of the game - steal a Kwama Egg from Fargoth, and all the other Kwama Eggs in the game are automatically assigned ownership of Fargoth as well.
This doesn't sound that bad per se, but once your Kwama Eggs have several dozen owners on them (visible if you're looking at them with "TFH" ("toggle full help") enabled), it starts to annoy me.
So, the only items that I steal in Morrowind now are books.
I haven't ever played Daggerfall, but if you can just sell the items back to their previous owners, it sounds like there was no ownership system at all; that would make it a lot more fun for me.
But well, so far I can only tell that I prefer to steal items in Oblivion. Tidying up every little shack from all the random clutter (which is worth a few coins, thanks to the OOO mod)... that's something I like to do. Stealing in Oblivion is a lot like stealing in Morrowind, bugged ownership system aside.

i never found it all that engaging. in fact i found looting every single piece of armor and making the 10 trips was the only way to get anywhere in the game anyway.
and the fact that you can just roam freely around anyones house just made it too easy/boring.
deffinately better in oblivion where you'd get chased out of houses and had to sneak and develop skills alot more.
there's even a thief mod for obl that gives you all the thief arrows and whatnot.

Oh, is the Thief Oblivion mod good? I remember being discouraged for playing it like that when Oblivion first came out.

Honestly i was abut done playing Oblivion by the time it was released. I don't think there were neccessarily any missions. Just equipment hidden in a certian well (in Tribunal I think).
the rope arrows made it easy to get to places you 'shouldn't be'. Not sure but there is also a lighting mod I think, not sure if it's combined or seperate.
I wouldn't say it detracts from Obivion at all, but can't say it realy added much either.
