* Grab it, perhaps by using Chameleon or just having high amounts of Stealth* Teleport out of there with Recall or one of the Intervention spells* Drop it infront of the Temple or Shrine you're standing now* Run to your haven or the merchant with most money, and place a Mark* Head back to your stolen loot* Take the hammer and use Recall to head to the next destination* Sell it or put it into your shelf.
This is why my Mysticism is always very well-developed after a couple of levels. It works for dungeon raids just as well as for this hammer, you see - better perhaps, because then you don't have to be concerned about being stealthy while picking this item up again if there should be people around infront of the Temple or Shrine.

Man, I miss the many months I lost on Morrowind... A truly flawed yet unique gem.
Will I ever feel that again?

There's at least one Thief mod for Oblivion that adds in either Basso or Cutty (can't remember which) as a fence; it allows you to purchase most of the gear from Thief from him, and he can give you missions which are randomly generated based on some templates (basically, steal Item X from Dungeon X)---with the added bonus that, while on his missions, you automatically fail if detected. Which means no combat, lots of tension, and lots of sneaking :-)
The mod is a lot of fun--they even voiced Basso!--but it's a little buggy. I only did a few of the missions, but in some of them, the meshes and textures went wonky, making people into black voids which projected laser-looking eye beams to show their line of sight, and which eventually crashed the game. I don't know if that's been fixed, or if it was caused by a conflict with other mods I had running, but it was definitely a bummer given the awesomeness of the rest of the mod.

Ahh Daggerfall lots of fond memories there.
A neat trick to make money there was go into a store, wait till after closing time...
Then pick up everything and sell it to the owner of the store :)
Yes he will literally buy his own stock you steal in front of him.
I have a program I wrote for daggerfall actually that backs up your savegame files which was very handy if you like to save a lot or play more then one character, or more then one person plays it.
I can get it from my backups if anyone wants a copy.

Fun story from an Oblivion playthrough: I started the independent thievery mission, and I went robbing the guard towers in the Imperial City. Grabbed a lot of armor, weapons, etc. from shelves and chests, also pickpocketed what I could from the sleeping guards. Including the boots and greaves of one of the captains. Which led to said captain patrolling the city pantsless for the rest of the game. :p
