Agreed; Valve would be nuts to give up on Half-Life. I'm a little skeptical about Portal 2, though. While I'm all for another set of portal puzzles as interesting as the ones in the original, it would be nice if they could keep the puzzles and also do something more with it; otherwise it'll just feel like a glorified expansion pack.

I'm under the impression Valve will use L4D as a sort of gap filler, maybe a release once a year or every two years. Meanwhile, Half-Life will remain its heavy hitter, with most of their talent and effort going into it. It'll take longer for them to come out with a new HL game, but it'll be worth it (like the jump for HL to HL2).

Wait. So you
have actually given up on HL3 ever coming out?
I've given up on
Episode 3 coming out, and if the rumors are true, so has Valve. It's nothing to fret over, though. Because it sounds more like we're getting a full blown sequel in lieu of a fancy expansion.
All evidence is pointing towards this. A. supposedly new engine (or at least a greatly revamped Source), a good deal more gameplay time than the previous expansions, and the fact it's taking forever to make...I'm sure at some point, Valve just shrugged and said "eh fuggit, lets go ahead and make HL3".

Exactly. They need to make a statement or something to say this. And release a screenshot.

Errr, guys, the initial discussion was on giving up on Half Life 3, not Ep3!
Go back and re-read - fonz you said you had given up on Half Life 3.
Ep3? Yeah, it may never come out I agree. Or if it does it might just be a small transition Episode from the old engine to the new.

I think it might be. I'd be willing to bet big money that Episode 3, if it comes out at all, is going to be drastically short; events in the first two episodes all point to the Borealis, and judging by the concept art, there isn't going to be a whole lot in the way of location variety. It's essentially going to be the HL2 chapter Our Benefactors on a much more epic scale, is my theory.

Well HL2 was supposed to start on the Borealis so making it the starting point of a huge episode or a sequel doesn't sound like such a big stretch to me.
