Before I would even THINK about buying thief 4 ... - by webe123

Isn't T4 - like all AAA games these days - going to be primarily a console release, and tailored to console/controller limitations ?
If that's true, and it makes sense in terms of potential customer numbers (and how they dumbed down the new Deus Ex), then isn't T4, erm, fu*ked ?

If there are "achievements", I'm going to cry. That is the dumbest thing to hit gaming over the past decade. The only two innovations in these types of games over the past decade have been pixel shaders and physics engines.

How'd they dumb down DX:HR exactly? Besides melee, anyway...we won't talk about that. But the rest of the game is, in fact, surprisingly faithful to the original.

Heh, I like achievements. They're neat. :)
Recently Randy Smith wrote a cool article about achivements and how they could work in a game like Thief, and also how they really would not work at all in a game like Thief. I wish I remember where it was.
Basically, they're cool if they give a little thumbs up when the player does something very difficult but obviously a clear part of the main gameplay strategy. If they give you a thumbs up for doing something that you thought was your own unique idea, it's bad... because it shows you that it wasn't your own unique idea after all. So, an achievement for finding 100% of the loot is good. One for taking every KO'd guard and throwing them in the dining hall with a bottle of booze for each one is bad.

Yup. I like em too. Though like you said, they do work better for some games than they do others.
Basically, they're the modern equivalent of a high score. You wanna show everyone you beat The Hospital dark world in Super Meat Boy without dying once? You've got the achievement right there on your list, doing all that bragging for you. It's like your little personal badge of honor/skill.
But for the very reasons you stated, it wouldn't work for a game like Thief. The only good use I could see them being put to would be as waypoint markers to show people how far along in the game you are. For everything else, they're too distracting, and too...er...mood killery.

Thief already gives achievements: Acknowledged completion of objectives, and the reward is progress and satisfaction, and I like that they are
not conventional and not tied-in in anyway to the Internet. I also like people posting their zany stunts on the forums in a more organic and personal way, not necessarily predicted by playtesters, artists, and programmers who added in achievements but missed bugs and glitches, and still don't acknowledge the organic work that went into achieving them. How much money could be knocked off the pricetag for all the work put into achievements?

I can't wait to get the "Bow Upgrade Achievement".
Sorry. I couldn't resist. :eww:

In the first Thief game, there were 13 loading screens. They then expanded on this in a later edition which added three more, for a total of 16 loading screens.
In the second Thief game, it shipped with 15 loading screens. As we know, they had planned a Gold edition for Thief 2 as well, which would have added a minimum of 3 more load screens for a total of 18.
Fucking LGS, load screen nazis.

Achievements would kick ass if they were stuff like "Completed mission without arousing suspicion on Expert"
