There is no "max_polygons" command. However, there IS a "max_polys" command. In olddark, input could range from 0-2048, and was set to 1024 by default. If the on-screen polys went much above this value, Dromed would crash. Unfortunately, the thief executable's max_polys was set to 1024, and couldn't be changed. Off the top of my head, I'm not entirely sure how newdark manages things, other than the fact that it supports more polys. I expect it's just set to the limit by default.
One thing to consider, for large outdoor areas; if you increase the texture scale of your terrain brushes (to 17 or more) your terrain cells will be bigger, and reduce poly and cell counts somewhat. This of course stretches the texture out and reduces detail.

Yep but the first limits that we can reach when you try complex architecture, is the cellings limit and too the vertex limit.
