Left aside that both DromEd and T3Ed were not really "static". And I'm not somehow confident about Thief IV, I'll just wait and see, but I wanted to throw in the idea.

Once we release TDM, how much better it can become in the future will partly rest on the dedication of the community.
I was thinking of the possibility to rewrite the source code when/if it's needed (making it run on newer hardware or port it to other platforms, for example). That would make it more of a toolset for the future. For a commercial toolset (Thief IV) we might never get hold of any source code (judging from the past) or it would take several years. But maybe I am putting too much emphasis on this!?
I'm not saying that T3Ed (or "T4Ed") can't evolve or that DromEd hasn't, but they can't surpass their engines like I understand that TDM could.

No need to rewrite the source code for that. The d3 engine is already built to run on Linux, Mac and Windows. We already maintain a working linux port, so the only one left is Mac. Tweaks to run on newer hardware might be warranted as technology moves forward. There will definitely be a few tweaks made by our coders when the code is released.

Thief 4
will be done, anyway the commitment is already there. I think that cat has crawled out of its bag by now. But yeah, we don't know how good it will be. Deux Ex 3 should be a fair judge of that; let's hope history doesn't repeat itself.
I actually somewhat hope now that it's a different setting and releases with an editor ... so then you have Darkmod for medieval classical FMs and T4 for a more modern (or whatever) setting and tools. (I go back and forth, actually, on what setting I'd like to see for T4; my first priority is wanting it to be
good). They'll (very, very likely) be using the Tomb Raider Engine, but I think id4 and Dark Radient will still have it beat. But if it's a different setting T4 wouldn't be really competing with Darkmod anyway.
I think many of the elements of thief that make it great and thiefy as we know it are related to the story and the setting not just the gameplay and playability.
That is why I think changing the setting is a mistake. After all, what are the odds that we get the playability we want, IE rope arrows, non-toxic h20, etc... SOmething is bound to change. If you change the setting too you might as well just call it something else entirely. I know the midieval thing is 'played out' but realistically Thiefy can any sequel be if its not steampunk or gothic? TDM might be the best approximation that we can hope for in the way of a sequel to thief, as we know it.
