The most captivating facial expressions I have ever seen on a human being so far are the grimaces of my little son when he craps his diapers. Timeless. No youtube link though :(

Four selections:
Though it's a shambles of a movie, I have to agree with D'Arcy...the scene between Dennis Hopper and Christopher Walken in True Romance is full of underlying darkness and menace.
One of favorite scenes of all-time is from Barton Fink, when Barton is confronted by the real Charlie Meadows. You can almost feel the hell fires licking your balls, as Barton realizes exactly where he's at, and why he's there.
The "hill of beans" scene between Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman in Casablanca.
And, of course, Vincent D'Onofrio's parting scene for Leonard (Private Pyle), in Full Metal Jacket. Hi, Jooooker.

I have to say, that while nothing ever reaches the heartbreaking poignance of Ellen Burstyn's monologue in Requiem For a Dream (Scotts' first post), two of the most amazing recent performances in terms of pure acting were from Javier Bardem and Christoph Waltz as Anton Chigurh and Hans Landa, respectively. When speaking about Javier's turn as Anton Chigurh, everyone remembers (

And the last one would of course be Inglourious Basterds's opening scene - Hans Landa might have devolved into a bit of a caricature by the end of the movie, but that opening conversation -- chilling doesn't even begin to describe it.

I still have no idea what you're talking about, but hell yes! What a fantastic scene, and ranks up there as one of the best opening scenes ever.
Off-topic, but my short list of some of the other greatest opening scenes ever for setting the tone of a movie:
1. Brazil
2. M
3. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
4. Mother Night
5. Kick Ass

Which made it all the more disappointing to see ingl0riou5 b4sterdz devolve into a comic.
Anyway, in terms of best acting scenes, let's just say that you can't handle the truth.
Since everyone knows the scene anyway, here's a good machinima of it.

Half Life 2's excellent facialanimation is somewhat held back by Barney strafing around all over the courtroom floor. But apart from that, that's some damn fine acting!

While not a "best acting scene..... EVER" Christian Bale's recent turn in The Fighter was very commendable and in particular, the scene where he emotionally manipulates his mother (who is upset at finding him back at the crack house) by softly singing one of her favourite songs to her in the car when he realises he can't wriggle his way out of it was just brilliantly done.

I don't think we can really bring up No Country for Old Men without mentioning the end

Or visiting Ellis (all the versions of that I can find are out of synch though)
