And to Taffer36: My argument was for what I pretty much said now - the combat in the three games you mentioned is so fucking
different that your sentence about enjoying one and not the other made no sense whatseover.
I think my point was less about comparing the games and their combat systems directly, and more simply about THIS IS FUN and THIS IS NOT FUN.
I don't see how that relates to your previous point, though. I never said that I didn't understand why people like RPG's, I TOTALLY understand why people do. I simply pointed out that there are parts of RPG's that I dislike, and clearly even people who like RPG's don't fully enjoy either.

Halo has you fighting against 6
million goddamn midget aliens and the occasional big alien whose idea of "cover" is constantly rolling left and right.
They only rolled in Halo 2. And they did it to 1) dodge a rocket heading their way, 2) dodge a speeding car coming their way, and 3) dodge a grenade blast.
And really, their idea of cover was, you know, FINDING COVER and USING IT TO STOP GETTING HIT BY STUFF. I think that's a pretty accurate description of cover.
I've already stated that I love Half-life 2 as well, and that there are aspects of their combat system that I respect (the feeling of OH SHIT) but I just don't think that the quality of the combat is comparable to other popular shooter games (even if it doesn't really have to compare, since Half-life 2 is about SOOOO much more than shooting combine soldiers).

They didn't make use of cover in my game. I don't know what game you were playing but they pretty much just ran around like retards in mine.

List addendum: No More Heroes - I forgot about this game. I would probably put it in at number 5. Not as good in story or style as Killer 7 but the two things that carry No More Heroes, Travis Touchdown, and blowing people up with a fake lightsabre, keep it consistently fun from start to finish. No More Heroes is perhaps the only Wii game where flailing your arm about feels better than a button press and where the remote's horribly inaccuracy doesn't detract from the player's enjoyment, as a result No More Heroes is possibly my favourite Wii game.

Gears of War's idea of gameplay is "take cover and occasionally pop up to shoot".
[There was a plane picture here, but I realized it's more case of a fanboy rage than missing the point, so it was removed]

since most members of this subforum are incapable of understanding irony, continued references to plane pictures (mocking though they may be) is eventually going to turn dethtoll's pathetic one-man meme into something far grosser.
please think before you post!

you honestly believe dethtoll has ever said one single thing that was over my head?
I'm just working to keep this place from devolving into 4chan, or neogaf, or worse! ...difficult, though, when ignorance seems to be the objective...

I've only played GTA4 this year on the PS3 and it's beautifully realised gameworld in need of something other than chase and whack missions.
also this
I totally agree, I actually prefer just playing around with Gta games (especially SA and GTA4) rather than playing the story. If anyone has ever played the user made San Andreas Multiplayer mod, thats is really cool, people have made rpg style servers where you play it more like a mmo than anything else.
