Wrong. Or was that a fact? Then your facts are incorrect.:p

The best three '08 Games (in no particular order):
LEGO Batman
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Sonic Unleashed (Wii)
Neither Dead Space (the camera is probably the closest I've ever been to becoming physically ill from playing a game) nor Spore (but some 50-100 hours played is still solid entertainment in my book) is as fun as any of those and I've yet to play Fallout 3. I've mostly been playing '07 or older games this year.

I got Lego Batman for Christmas and have been digging the hell out of it so far. I'm surprised just how much fun I am having with it.

I've watched a few anal retentive friends play the Lego games. Sitting around, watching them make sure they bust each and every single damn breakable object on a single screen for lego tokens...for like 10 minutes straight...before moving on kinda ruined me on those games.
That said, my personal best games of the year are:
Fallout 3: Yeah, I'm jumping on this bandwagon.
Bionic Commando Rearmed: I know. I originally passed because of the stupid DRM issues, but then came running back a few months later when I realized it's Bionic Commando.
Persona 3: It's a Japanese high school dating drama based around an occult devil demon tower called Tartar Sauce or something like that that only shows up at midnight. HOW COULD I NOT LOVE THIS GAME?
Games I probably will like but have yet to play them for one reason or another:
Mass Effect: Saw a friend play this one on his 360 (shortly before it blew up for the 3rd time). Looked interesting. I'll give it a go here soon.
Games I hated:
Eh...already forgotten them.
And there we go. I haven't played as many new games this year, but the ones I have played have been quite nice.

Best RPG:-
Mass Effect
Runner-up:-
Fallout 3
Could you explain this choice (in a non-spoiler way)? The only games from 2008 I've played are L4D and Fallout 3, but I've been eyeing Mass Effect. For it to trump Fallout 3 in anyone's opinion speaks pretty highly of it.

I thought it was pretty fun, but I think Bioware dropped the ball when it came to the characters and the setting -- both aspects were really forgettable and lackluster for me.

It's really hard to compare those two games, because someone may easily prefer one over another simply because of not liking either space opera or 1950s SF. However, I have a good tolerance for both subgenres, and I played both games, and frankly - I don't understand why people like Mass Effect. I mean, I'm not saying they're wrong. It's their right to like whatever they find likeable. I just don't understand why.
Mass Effect is just so bland and cliched. The setting is a very generic space opera. I can't find a single distinguishing factor, anything that would make it different from, say, Babylon 5, or Star Trek. The three major alien races are just elves, gnomes and dwarves in disguise. The plot is a rehash of the same old Standard Bioware Plot they keep reusing in every game since Baldur's Gate. I mean, does anyone remember Morag and Aribeth from Neverwinter Nights? And did you notice five out of six companions are SF equivalents of princes or princesses?
Whenever I play a Bioware game, I have a feeling I've seen it all before, somewhere. Usually their games remind me of the pulp fantasy I read in high school. The problem is, I was already too old for those books back then. I only read them because my friends did.
Bioware did some solid work on backstory, but they didn't turn it into a game. I think that's the biggest difference between Fallout 3 and Mass Effect. Fallout 3 allows you to walk around the setting. Find some old bunker, search it, do some sightseeing, investigate that odd tall building you can see on the horizon. Help write a book, then meet people who've read it and hear what they think about it.
Mass Effect only lets you read an encyclopaedia. An unusually interesting encyclopaedia - I did read it all, even though I usually don't have patience for background prose (I didn't read most of books in Morrowind, for example). But I don't play games for their encyclopaedias.
Fallout 3 isn't perfect. It's a good game that could be so much better. By contrast, Mass Effect is a mediocre game that couldn't be any better, no matter how hard the authors tried. It just doesn't have that spark in it.
