It's the only 2008 game I've managed to finish this year. It'd probably make goty in any case though.

No, it was the one playthrough of Mass Effect. I tried to visit every barren world, populated by variations of the same three or four dungeons.

That's right you read right. Gears has never been any good, it's like some sort of horrible deformed child of Unreal and a 3rd person Adventure game.
The plot is laughable and even the gameplay is second rate(very repetitive).
It's the Halo effect, people lookst at all the fancy visuals and start drooling and don't get me started on the ignorant fanboys who'll buy anything with the Gears of War logo.

The Halo effect is people hating it because so many people like it, makes them feel special. Halo ain't a bad game and Gears of Wars 2 isn't the worst game of the year. Not nearly.
