Yeah I do; you're assuming based on the first game that the second is no different, but it's obvious you haven't played it. As far as shooters go, there's more variety in Gears 2 than in most. I'm not claiming it's perfect (far from it), but most of the criticism so far has been unfounded.
Gears is a samey shooter. That said, it is
fun. I played the first a few times, and enjoyed it each time, but it's the
same thing over and over. While it's not exactly a bad thing, it is if it isn't done right. Which Gears does only just.

you just dont understand the style, it's called "noir" .
J/k
Funny you should say that since you have no idea what noir actually
is.
Stop trying, vurt. You're the new DaveW and nobody listens to you.

The problem, Aja, is that GoW takes
itself seriously
No it doesn't

Stop trying to pretend you don't listen. Stop trying to pretend you have the slightest clue what film noir is, it's not something that is (unintentionally) funny because of lacking writing skills, in fact it has nothing to do with comedy, at
all ;)
Now, grow a beard, grow a brain, and come back when you actually have a clue. Kthxbye.

I don't mean to start a flame, but which aspect of original Fallout is most important in your opinion? Because if it's the turn based tactical combat, then Fallout 3 is indeed something very different ("Oblivion with guns", as some would put it). But if it's the post-apocalyptic grim dystopian pastiche of 1950s science-fiction with a bit of stinging irony and more than a bit of references to general mass culture, then Fallout 3 is has it all. They really did their homework, and they put a lot of work and talent in it.
I've put a bit of time into Fallout 3 and it's quite clear that Bethesda did
not do their homework, in fact it's more like they skimmed through the cliff notes. Now before you go and tag me as a card carrying member of the NMA realise I didn't expect, nor desire, third person perspective or turn based combat etc in Fallout 3. I was relishing the chance to explore the Fallout universe in a FPP with a more action orientated focus. What I got instead, after about 10 hours of playing, was a turgid bore of a game in a universe that bears only a passing, superficial, resemblance to Fallout.
It's cool that you, and many others liked it, but I'm just pointing out that Fallout 3 fails, in the 'traditionalists' eyes, in areas other than the gameplay changes.
Anyway my list:
Best:
Left 4 Dead - I was very suprised to like this one as much as I did. I didn't think fast zombies were going to work and all the preview videos looked terrible but it really came together in the end.
World of Goo - Such a magical game and that soundtrack is bloody amazing.
Dead Space - Another complete suprise. Completely uninspired and derivative but it's great fun.
Worst:
Fallout 3 - Started out OK, and got quite good when I applied some mods to it, but as stated earlier started to get dull around the 10 hour mark before I finally gave up after 20. The gameplay is repetitive and clunky and the story and dialog so terribly written that I really had no reason to play on. Some great scenery though and a couple of cool little moments.

I'm still waiting to like FO3. I feel the developers paid to much attention to the NMA folks, and bent the game toward their aspirations. The turn-based combat (which I would normaly prefer... in a isometric RPG, not a FPS) was no fun at all. The foul language seemed forced and added to please a certain group of guys, same with the absurd blow-the-guy's-head-off animation that followed almost EVERY combat situation. Sure, you can play it real-time, though it seems kind of broken, what with the lack of ammo. Yeah, the setting is cool to look at, but the movement speed is too slow, there's no option to pass time quickly (what happened there? That's a Fallout staple, for sure), and just like Oblivion, the land is pretty empty of life.
Maybe one day I'll finish it, but now it just sits there.
Oh, Game of the Year? There wasn't one. I had more fun replaying System Shock 1 in glorious 640x480 than any other game I can remember.

Are you referring to that whole thing with
Max Payne from a few months back? Because if you are, I seem to remember the main argument being about whether the game was trying to be straight up film noir or a parody, not whether the noir genre itself was inherently comedic.

I think it's a game that tries to be "noir", and, unintentionally, comes off as a bad parody, rediculing the genre. The Max Payne movie isn't a parody of the genre either, i've never seen anyone reviewing it as "pardody" (Lake is the writer here, too.)
I've never read any interview with Järvi/Lake where he says he's writing parody. The cover of Max Payne 2 says "A film noir love story". Not "a parody film noir love story".
Alan Wake is supposed to be inspired by Twin Peaks and Stephen King, if it comes of as cheezy as MP i think we can agree that it really
is unintentionall and that it does take itself seriously.

In fallout 3, T is wait, and allows you to pass up to 24 hours.
Just another one of those things that's in the manual and no where else.
Chuck on 27/12/2008 at 17:08
Thanks for that. I've got the D2D version; not sure where the manual is. Does anybody know where to find the manual?
