vurt - Max Payne (the game) is indeed a parody/pastiche of the genre. If you can't notice it, you're as thick as... well, a really thick thing.
So what if Järvi never explicitly said he wanted humour? Do you seriously need to have a "wink wink, nudge nudge" to get any joke? You just can't write the dialogue and situations like that (the fourth-wall-breaking segments ffs!) and be absolutely serious.
Also, what you say about the game does apply to the movie. Yes, if that one was funny at all, it was unintentional. But that's because the makers were just as thick as you, and had pretty much nothing to do with Remedy. By the way, get your facts straight - Järvi didn't write the movie. He's just credited as "character writer" which they did to acknowledge he created the franchise.
Also, I'm not a fan of Stephen King, so I can't comment on that, but:
"inspired by Twin Peaks"..."f it comes of cheezy" THAN IT'S GOT IT RIGHT.
Don't tell me you thought Twin Peaks was absolutely serious too.
Oh, and on topic:
:D : Fallout 3
 : GTA IV

I'm still waiting to like FO3. I feel the developers paid to much attention to the NMA folks, and bent the game toward their aspirations. The turn-based combat (which I would normaly prefer... in a isometric RPG, not a FPS) was no fun at all. The foul language seemed forced and added to please a certain group of guys, same with the absurd blow-the-guy's-head-off animation that followed almost EVERY combat situation. Sure, you can play it real-time, though it seems kind of broken, what with the lack of ammo. Yeah, the setting is cool to look at, but the movement speed is too slow, there's no option to pass time quickly (what happened there? That's a Fallout staple, for sure), and just like Oblivion, the land is pretty empty of life.
Maybe one day I'll finish it, but now it just sits there.
From the sounds of it, I'd say your seriously mistaken. The impression I was given during development was that Bethesda now owns the franchise and that they're going to do whatever they wanted. There was also next to no attempt at interaction with the existing fanbase whatsoever. Also, a lot of the complaints about the game from previews centered around the exact things that you mentioned. Also, no option to pass time quickly is hardly a Fallout staple since both of the previous main entries of the series had the ability to move time forward by a certain amount at any time.

I mean, some bits are just brilliant, like all those sentient robots with thinly veiled desire to destroy all humanity, who try to get around their three laws of robotics as much as possible. Or the radio broadcasts. Or that tiny Vault 101 sidequest you get near the end of game. Or the Liberty Prime.
Mmm, sounds more like Fallout 2 than Fallout 1. :erg:

They've kept the "it's a postnuclear wasteland and everyone is barely surviving" part, if that's what you mean. They've also reused some themes (for instance, Megaton is essentially a new incarnation of Junktown). Besides, Fallout has always been a pastiche. The sequel only expanded on the same core ideas. It's a matter of personal preference, of course, but I do enjoy this kind of sense of humour.

Obviously!
I'm beginning to wonder if there was ever a single game released which was actually serious.

You misread my statement. What I said was fast-forwarding time is/was a staple of the Fallout games. Oh well, your other points are well taken. I just can't help but think they were influenced by this tired statement that sprouted up the day it was announced that Bethesda would be doing Fallout 3: "It will be Oblivion with guns." I think they tried too hard to make sure it wouldn't be Oblivion with guns.

For chrissakes, people, Fallout is a game which starts with a series of comercials, showing:
- a smiling cartoon character being closed behind a giant cog-shaped door,
- a cheesy "patriotic" advertisement urging the audience to buy war bonds,
- a highway cruiser that costs "only 199.999,00",
and then proceeds to reveal that the TV set is standing in the middle of a ruined city.
Fallout is serious. And at the same time it's a pastiche. This is called "irony". However, most people couldn't tell irony even if it jumped out from behind some bushes and bit them in their ass.
Koki on 27/12/2008 at 19:11
So it's serious, but it's pastiche, and that's irony?
I do believe you have no idea why it's raining.

I can notice shitty writing.
It was a long time since i saw Twin Peaks, i would probably find it cheezy if i saw it today. Many movies from the 80's - 90's are extremely cheezy by todays standards. And sure, you can call every over-the-top action movie/game with shitty writing in existance a "parody", but most of the time it's actualy not intended.
But who cares, it's all good if you like the game. I didn't care much for it because the writing annoyed the hell out of me, even if its meant to be cheezy it's not done in a funny way, imo.

Then we must agree to disagree. Huzzah for diversity of opinion!
