I want to introduce my friend to the world of thief, and I'm wondering what level to use.
It should be something with a rich/beautiful enviornment, some fun puzzles, but not be over-the-top hard.
Any suggestions?

thanks for the suggestion! That's one of the ones I was thinking of- it's a fair bit easier than ominious bequest, as I recall... is that right?

Rose Cottage.

playing through BT again right now, and unless my memory is off:
There was a weird cutscene when you leave you apartment where you see a floating hammer, followed by garret saying "What was that?"
but that's not happening, now. It's not really a big deal, but it makes me wonder if I'm missing an important script or something. I've never played on this comp. Or am I simply misremembering?
Also, rose cottage is another one i was thinking might be good- it might be a tad on the creepy side though, at least, for now!

I want to introduce my friend to the world of thief ...
In this case I'd start with Thief 1, that's how the Garrett saga begins ... :erg:

people these days are so spoiled though. I started with TDP in '98 when it came out. But I think it's a hard sell these days, being so outdated. Many of the FMs are much more enticing to a modern audience, I think. Obviously they're not Crysis, or Skyrim or anything, but some of the FMs are downright gorgeous! ...can't say the same for Baffords mannor, as much as I love the place!

Actually, I was going to suggest mission #2. Especially some of the the areas that you get to later, like the Necropolis and of course the virtual Keeper Complex. Also, the cutscene where
Nyarsal arrives on the island, pretty cool stuff...

Really, the only correct answer is Yandros' "OMG get your blackjack back! Lol", of course, then you have the problem that no future mission will be able to live up to that standard.:eww:
Seriously though, I would go with an oldie-but-goodie, "The 7th Crystal", that mission really is like the Thief FM gateway drug. Also, I don't know why this is in a spoiler tag either.

What a good question and I am surprised to see a question like this brought up, if it has not been brought up before.
There can't be just one answer though, and it depends on your friend's personality and what they like in a game.
It depends on if they like architecture, horror, puzzles, rooftopping, story development, or straight out city thievery.
I am going to second the Rose Cottage suggestion, but there are a few more to see as well such as each with their own types of merit. Rose Cottage shows a good balance of both gameplay (even though objectives are slightly linear, but there are ways around that) and beauty for a dated engine.
A quick introduction if horror is an element of what they expect in gameplay, would be Deceptive Perception. It is a quick and engrossing FM for a dated game engine and if the surrounding mood is correct I think it would sell them on the idea of becoming a fan of horror FMs. (Sorry about the redundancy.)
The Seven Sisters gives a player alot to do which involves most of what the character of Garrett is supposed to do and allows a good base for building gameplay skills that would be used in any other FM.
There are some FMs that are nice to look at such as some of Christine Schneider's FMs.
I personally like watching some of the other FM authors style develop and improve over time.
So it depends on your friend's expectations of what a game should provide.
It should also be a good idea to push the idea that these FMs came from everyday people who decided to use this game engine to tell interesting stories, as well as construct puzzles and environments, and that is available for anyone who wants to tell different kinds of stories within this medium that there is a large support network to do so.
